Rectal Pain with 11 Yr. Old Son

my 11 yr. old son has been complaining of rectal pain and it is becoming more and more frequent. Sometimes it is during a bowel movement, but more often it is after, sometimes an hour or more after a BM. He comes to me wanting me to "do something" , but I don't have any idea how to help this situation. Of course when I say we need to see a Dr. he doesn't want to. He does have bleeding at times and I'm guessing it is a little tear from hard stool. Any suggestions before going to the Dr. for a very uncomfortable exam?

What can I do next?

Sounds like a hemorrhoid to me. If he doesn't want to go to the doctor will he at least let you take a look? Those can be sooo painful! Good Luck!

You're the parent. Get him to the dr. He could be bleeding internally or he may just need a stool loosener (hopefully). The child will only say he hates you; they don't. They just don't know how else to express themselves.

Yes, go to the doctor. You certainly don't want this to become an acute, serious problem. "More frequent" "Pain" "Blood"...never a good combination but not necessarily a hard fix.

Do take a good look at his diet too - is he drinking a lot of pop, sports drinks, eating pizza, sugary or salty snacks like chips, candy etc.... Does he get a good amount of fruits, vegetables, 8 oz. of 100% juice, not the sugary stuff? Does he drink water?

He may be embarrassed, however, you'll want to address this with the dr. anyway because it's a good idea to direct an 11 year old toward good nutritional habits that he will practice throughout his life. I certainly don't want to suggest that your son has poor eating habits if he doesn't. I just know how my 11 year old son and his friends are and, it's amazing what they can consume! This is a good time in his life to learn how to make good decisions about how he should properly fuel his body and how often.

Good luck to you and your son.

Get him to the Dr.

Aloe Vera gel is a wonderful "cure all" with no adverse side affects. You can use it in the mouth even. Great for all skin conditions, etc. xo

Agree that you should consult with your pediatrician and that your child shouldn't have a say in the matter. I wouldn't make a big deal about the doctor. Kids need to learn that doctors help us, they don't hurt us, right? Be gentle but firm and tell him you know he will do a great job. Period. To talk about it endlessly probably worries him (and might even exacerbate the problem). Good luck!

So sorry to hear of your troubles. Children and constipation is not fun. I had it when I was a child and it is not fun at all. He should see his doctor though. Does he eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies for fiber? Does he drink plenty of water? Food is the first culprit and if he snacks alot, eats sugary foods, lots of processed food or fast foods, then his little digestive system cannot break it down.

Probiotics would be great for him! It aids in digestion, provides nutrients that are lacking from his diet and builds up his immune system. So many benefits of it. I would be happy to provide more information if you give me your email address. But, you really do need to take him in for his own good and your peace of mind. I'd be happy to be of further help. Here's to your health!

Hi G.:

It may be your son's diet. He may be getting too much fiber or it could be an ulcer. What does he eat? More importantly, his stool may be too hard. Have you tried PREPARATION H suppositories? It could be swollen hemorrhoids as well. Either way, you need to get down to the crux of the matter ASAP.

Hi G.!

I would definately take your son to the Dr. You do not want him to start to hold his BM in to avoid the pain and cause more problems in the end. This happened to my son and he ended up in the hospital for over a week. He had a major bowel impaction/obstruction and other problems because of this. He also in the end lost all muscle control and had to wear diapers for several years until he was about 12 because of seepage. You want to avoid this at all costs!

You will want to ask his ped about a natural stool softener- not a laxative though! This should help and make them less painful. Hopefully it will also prevent any further treatment and injuries. Hopefully it will also help to heal the body as well.

Also, the Drs will make the exam as painless as possible. They know they are dealing with a child. They may not even do an exam there except on the outside based on your description- what color is the blood- how much- how often etc... Be prepared to answer those questions!

One question I do have... is he drinking enough water? That will help things along as well and help to make them not so hard.

I wish you and your son luck and many blessings! Let us know what happens!

G.,
This may sound like an old wive's tale, but it works. Try to insert a bit of olive oil into his anus, then wait... also, give your son plenty of fiber-rich foods.. the best I know of being oranges and kiwi. It may be he is dehydrated, does he drink enough water? Avoid all fizzy drinks, even juice, try to give the max. in water. Ok, hope the olive oil will help him, it has worked for many people I know.
Take care,
Hilarie

My 8 year old son has the same problem. I took him to the Dr. (which I strongly suggest) and found he had a timy tear in his rectum. There is not much you can do except a fiber supplement to help make passing a stool easier. The reason why I suggest a Dr. check is because it is possible to have a tear that actualy goes up into your body and makes a tunnel. You need surgery to correct this.

I babysit a little guy that had problems with a sore rectum for about four months. Bowel movements were painful and his little bum hurt like the dickens for a long time afterward. He started holding it and making himself very constipated and that just made everything worse.

He had a raw looking ring around his rectum and sometimes it would bleed. We tried cremes (his mother and I) and anitbiotic creme and so forth. We tried powder and nothing worked. She took him to the doctor and they kept telling her it was a yeast infection. After several medicines and cremes for yeast including Diflucan which is serious yeast medicine nothing worked. I did some research on the net for a few days and finally came across a medical site that had pictures of little toddlers with sore bottoms. Sure enough that was it. I printed the info for his mom and she took him back to the doctor and the doctor prescribed and antibiotic and it cleared up in a day or two. He hasn't had a problem since.

It turns out it was a type of strep. Can't remember the exact name of it now, but it was terrible and did not go away. It just got worse and worse.

Now if he doesn't have any sore looking area on his rectum then it may just be constipation. You may need start sprinkling flax seed or bran on his food. Start feeding him a small salad everyday with dinner (works for me). You can also get Welch's Frozen Grape Juice from concentrate and make that...worked when I was pregnant. Also Aldi carries a version of Frosted Shredded Mini Wheats that has something like 5 to 8 grams of fiber per serving...my kids love it and it's better than the name brand because it stays crunchy much longer. That keeps my girls regular along with a cup of yogurt...the Activia.

Hope something in all that will help.

An 11 year old with blood in the stool, and you're letting him make the decision on whether to see the doctor or not? Yikes. Make the appointment now. It's probably nothing, but you cannot be sure.

Give 100% whole grain foods!!! Drink lots of water. Cut out sugary foods & juices & sodas. Offer fresh salads with spinach. Raisins. Make sure they are getting exercise (this will help stimulate his bowels). This has made a difference for my kids 11-19months

I don't know how his diet are, but now is the time to enforce high fiber grains, lots of fruits and veggies. If he drinks pop or caffinated beverages, juices, kool-aid, lots of food dye. Now is the time to stop and convincing him may take little more than telling him to try this or he is going to the doctor. No pills should be needed to up fiber intake in anyone unless you have a feeding issue or major disease or illness. If proper nutrition is followed, fiber helps both hard bowel movements as well as diarrhea. He also should probably include a yogurt(no not gogert) that is low in sugar high in probiotics. Enforce this by having the whole family eat healthy. If you honestly already do then it is time to see a doctor.

sounds like he is constipated.....first up his liquid intake (water is the best), increase his fiber ( add something like Benefiber or Metamucil to his daily routine).....if he is getting abdominal pain and this continues, definately seek medical attention. My sister has Crohn's disease. It is a degenerative form ulcerative colitis and if not under control can be life threatening. Her problems started as a teen, and got bad enough she dropped out of college due to the constant flare ups..... Little did we know that with proper attention in the early stages she could have been much better off. You are right to be concerned...and still cautious. Best wishes with this

I developed a fissure right after I became pregnant with my daughter (she's 15 mos. now). It is extremely painful. There are some points I want to make:
1.) Ask your pediatrician to give you a referral for a gastroenterologist. This is who specializes in this type of problem (or any others in that area).
2.) As stated repeatedly, fiber and hydration are of very key importance here. Even though I am very careful about getting the right amount of fiber in my diet and drink tons of water, I still have to take Benefiber every single day (and a stool softener everyday when I was pregnant). And the fissure still comes back every once in awhile.
3.) Have him lay on his side, then very carefully and not too much spead his cheeks apart. This isn't necessarily for YOU to see if he has a fissure as much as it is to see if there are hemmoroids on the outside. If not, please do NOT put anything up there as someone suggested. It can be incredibly painful to do so if you have a fissure. If it does appear he has hemmoroids, then yes put Prep H on the outside. The gastro doctor will do a quick internal exam, but he's not trying to keep medicine up there...he's feeling for hemmoroids on the inside. He will tell your son that it will feel like he has to "go" when he checks him.
4.) I actually get a topical ointment from a custom dosing place that my doctor prescribed. It has 3 types of medicines in it...Lidocaine, a type of triple antibiotic (and now I'm blanking on the third one, sorry).
5.) And something you may not think of, but I seriously can do all of the above when the fissure tears and NONE of it matters if I don't use a sitz bath (warm water and epsom salt)! He doesn't have to actually sit in a tub every time. At Walgreens they sell these things that actually fit on the toilet that he can sit in (give him a comic book and sit for 5 minutes a few times a day, if possible). Also, what has worked for me is just using a peri-bottle everytime I go. Fill it with warm water and squirt clean (I think the europeans have been onto something for quite some time with the bidets):-).

Good luck to you and your son. I hope any of this has helped.

Most likely it is a rectal fissue with constipation. There are stool softeners like Miralax that have recently just gone over the counter. Call your pediatrician for suggestions as they should be able to give you advise without needing your son to go into the office.

Perhaps if you could get some QTips and apply some vaseline on them as needed, you can coat your son's rectal area with vaseline as often as needed before and after bowel movements
that may bring him temporary comfort until you see the doctor. He may be able to do it himself, if possible.
