I'm planning to paint two of my tan rooms very dark - one dark blue and the other wine red. The last time I painted red over tan it took 4 coats of Behr, I don't have the time or money for that!
Can anyone recommend a good paint that will cover light walls in 1 - 2 coats? Also, should I prime the wall first?

Go to the Sherwin Williams on Preston (north of Lebanon) in Frisco. The guys in there are so helpful!! They will give you great advice and I think there was an ad in Sunday's paper that said you could get $10 off a $50 purchase at Sherwin Williams.
Yep with red you have to prime. I did a burgundy red and my primer was a Pepto Bismol pink color. I managed to get by with just 1 coat after the primer. A good roller is a must too. It pays to spend a little more to get a good one that will get into all the grooves in your textured walls.
I just painted my nearly white walls a dark red. I did prime the walls first. The base paint that was tinted red was a bluish grey so I just used a grey primer on the walls. I still did 2 coats of red, however. I don't think there's any way to avoid that. The primer WAS a little less expensive than the paint though. You CAN get your primer tinted the shade you're painting though so you'd be able to paint less though...
With reds, you need to prime the walls first. The paint store should tint the primer pink. Behr is a good paint.
Wal-mart sells a Kilz brand paint that has a primer already mixed in with the colored paint. My mom used it and had to apply only 2 coats. Good luck!
Kilz them first. But re-think the red. I painted one of mine red and 2 years now I'm wondering why my friends didn't stop me. And it's going to be REALLY hard to cover red... it's the worst.
Hi A., I am a specialty painter by trade. Any time 'jewel tones' are the paints of choice, you definitely should prime your walls. And, yes, tint the primer to work with your base and finish coat colors. Primers only can take so much colorant, so you get pink (for the wine red room) or grey-ish blue (for the dark blue room) in your case. Your paint store rep will help/advise you on this. Be aware that jewel tone paints require 2-3 coats, depending on the manufacturer. The base for these paints is usually a 'clear base' (almost transparent). Some of these type bases are 'dark bases' for darker blues. Thus the need for more than one coat to achieve the desired look. Most of the other paint tones start out with a white base (non-clear), prior to the tints being added. These usually cover with 1-2 coats depending, because the base starts with pigmentation. Jewel tone colors will intensify their depth and beauty with two-three coats. (Note: I would allow a 24 hour drying period between each coat.) If these rooms are painted with the proper steps and care, they should be fantastic. Off set these deep, intense colors with contrasting colors, furniture in your rooms. Sorry! But you can't get away w/ only 1-2 coats on most dark colors- reds especially. Using a dark grey flat paint or a darker red as a primer will help, but that's just the way those colors are. Behr is really great paint- it's just all about base painting w/ those dark colors.
