Recommendations for a Good Beginner Guitar for My Husband

My husband's birthday is coming up, and he's always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. I would like to get him a great beginner guitar and some private lessons as his b-day gift. Does anyone (or anyone's DH/SO) know of a good guitar to begin with? I was thinking acoustic would be best b/c I don't want to have to buy all the equipment that electric guitars need--especially if he ends up not even keeping up with the guitar playing...

hi, my husband has been playing guitar for a while now and my dad played most of his life. acoustic is the way to go, it's better to learn on it because you have to hit the chords just right to get the sound you want....with electric i think its a bit easier to get sounds out of. your probably gonna pay a decent amount of money for a good guitar but you can always try to sell it if he decides it's not for him. also look online for a used one. where are you looking for lessons from...what area. i know a great teacher who my husband used to get better (my husband is basically self taught) the guy who gives the lessons comes out to your house and the prices are more than reasonable. we live in the southeast side of chicago. im not sure how far he would travel but i would recommend him to anyone. i can give you the info if you need it. good luck

I think it depends on the type of music your husband will want to play. If he wants to "rock out" and play rock songs then he'll be disappointed with an acoustic guitar. If he's more into acoustic-type songs he'll love an acoustic guitar.

The most frustrating thing for people just starting out is they want to play songs they LIKE!! No one will stick with an instrument if all they can play is Mary Had A Little Lamb and other songs they never would listen to. That's a sure road to quitting! He's also not going to be happy if the guitar doesn't make the kind of sound he likes as well. Instrument quality is all about sound and how it plays.

Think about the type of music your husband listens to. Most of the songs on the radio aren't hard AT ALL to learn! He could be rocking out in no time.

Acoustic guitars are harder to learn how to play. And electric guitars aren't that much more. You could get a beginner electric guitar pack with everything you need including the amp for $150 or less if you go used.

I would just head to Guitar Center or Sam Ash and ask for help. Tell them about your husband and what your price range is. They'll help you get the right thing.

Most men would be happy with a Fender, which would give great acoustic and electric sound. I personally like Ibanez but they are a little more pricey.

You'll pay just as much to get a good acoustic! But if he's into acoustic music, he'll probably be OK with an acoustic guitar.

Definitely go with acoustic. My husband bought a guitar from the place he signed up for lessons. He paid a ton of money and then didn't keep up because the woman just kept trying to sell more stuff. I would go the cheap route first and then if he sticks to it, upgrade. I had looked online at the time and he could have bought one for about $50 (a lot less than what he paid). Our neighbor's son plays the acoustic guitar and he said it is easier to learn on it when I asked him a while back.
