Does anyone have a recommendation for a good hair stylist in the Waukee/West Des Moines area? I am looking to donate about 10 inches to locks of love so any experience with that would also be helpful. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I go to a girl at Bella Salon in Johnston. Her name is Crystal Leedom. She is really good. I tell her to do whatever she wants and am always happy with it. I would defently recommend her!

In response to the person who posted about Locks of Love not providing wigs for children with cancer, you should read their FAQs section on the Locks of Love website. It states quite clearly that they DO in fact have children with cancer who have recieved one of their wigs - albeit a synthetic one and not a human hair on (because the hair is usually temporary). So to say that they don't do anything for children with cancer at all isn't entirely truthful. Just thought I'd put that out their. Use your own judgement on Locks of Love, that's what I'd say. I'm donating to them simply because, either way it will help them help others in need.

Hi K.,
I love Shelley at Art of Life in West Des Moines/Urbandale. It is on 100th Street between Hickman and Douglas. It is an Aveda salon and they are really great! Their phone number is ###-###-####. All the gals (and guy too- Dave- the owner) are really good from what I hear, but I especially love Shelley!

What a neat thing with donating your hair to Locks of Love!
Hope this helps-
Tami Leonard

For Locks of Love,
Here is their website:
http://locksoflove.org/donate.html
they include the mailing address and also guidelines you need to follow. (The minimum length is 10 inches tip to tip).
You can have anyone cut your 10 or more inches to send in, it does not need to be a stylist (of course you may want to have your hair styled after the 10 inches is removed anyway!)
My husband and I cut each other's hair to send in several years ago.

I go to Jill at Salon Bliss (across from Jordan Creek) and I cut and donated my hair about a year ago. I had read the guidelines before I went, but I found out she had done it before and even sent them in with some others they had done earlier in the week. She seemed excited to be able to do it. Have fun!

My name is D. Earnest. I am in Florida. I do free haircuts for anyone donating to "Locks of Love". I also provide the form that you need to send in with the hair and I do the leg work for you. A lot of places, I've found actually require you to send in the hair yourself. I will do all of that for you.
Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. I know I'm not in the area you are looking for but if I can help in anyway I'd be honored.

Just so you know, do your research before choosing where to donate your hair:

Locks of Love DOES NOT make wigs for kids with cancer (as they like most people to think)!!!

It states on their site that they only make wigs for kids with permanent hair loss, and they consider chemotherapy to only be temporary. The number of kids that qualify for their program are very limited, yet they get thousands of hair donations each year. Some web sites suggest they they really sell most of the donated hair for profit!!!

All I ask is that you do your research (just google Locks of Love) and figure out who you really want to benefit from your donation. There are quite a few other programs out there, When my daughter (8 yrs. old) donated her pony tail we chose Pantene's Beautiful lengths program.

Spread the word,
T.

I really like my hairstylist. Her name is Sarah and she works at Avant Salon and Day Spa which is located at 4800 Mills Civic Pkwy. The number there is ###-###-####. What I like most about her is she is very particular about her work and gives great advice on what to do with your hair if you are not sure. Her haircuts also run about $28 plus tip which isn't bad for West Des Moines. Good luck with donating your hair, I think that is a wonderful thing.

Go to www.locksoflove.com and it will walk you through the rules and how to donate. My daughter and -I did this before the third was born and it was a great experience. Good luck finding a stylist - that's a hard one.

I don't live in your area, but Great Clips takes hair donations and will give you a free haircut in return. They even take care of the donation for you.

I've donated 3 times now and they have always been really good there. Then, if you want, you can find a good stylist later.

Hi K.,

I love Nail (pronounced Nial) at Beauty Brands at 10001 University in Clive. ###-###-####. I would recommend if you want to see him, that you schedule an appointment, he is pretty busy, but I can usually get in within a day or so. I never stayed with one stylist before, and I have been going to him exclusively for the past year and a half, because not only does he cut my hair well, but it has never been easier for me to make it look good on my own.

I have never done Locks of Love, so can't help there, but I think it is a very worthy cause, and anyone who does donate to this is awesome :) Hopefully this helps you.

Essentials Salon in Verona. Jen is the owner and the best stylist I have found over the last 8 years in Madison. Her prices are reasonable and it is an Aveda salon.

I am a mother of a 9 yr old boy and almost 6 yr old girl.
