Realtor Gift
Hello MaMa's - we just closed on our home yesterday & we are so excited. The realtor we used was new to the industry & did a superfabulous job for us. I wanted to give her a little something because she did a great job for us. However, as much as I tried to listen for her interest, I really couldn't get anything out of her. I'm usually pretty good about tuning in on what people say they like or wish they could have. At the closing yesterday, they had a Keurig Coffemaker that we were all saying we wanted including the realtor. Now, I know for budget reasons, at this time, we couldn't purchase one for her, but I thought of maybe a Bed, Bath & Beyond GC to go towards one she could by?? Would that be tacky? Or should I just buy a small gift instead? Again, we just want to give her a token of appreciation for all her hard work. Thanks in advance for your input!

You are a very generous person! I have NEVER heard of a buyer giving a realtor a gift - they make 4% (I think that is the percentage) of the selling price of your home. I have owned 4 homes, and each time, the realtor has given us a gift at the closing. (an address stamp, a silver platter, etc.)
I don't want to discourage your generosity, but I think that the best thing you could give her is a card expressing your gratitude and telling her that you will give a strong personal referral to anyone you hear who needs a realtor. Perhaps even write a letter to the agency she works for, telling them what a great job she did and (since she is new) that she is a great addition to their team. Congrats on your new home!

I agree with Jenn but if you do want to buy her something, definitely do not go for less valuable alternative to the coffee maker that she liked. Personally, I would send her a flower arrangement with a thank you letter that she can keep as a tangilble proof of her success for future job opportunities or for career advancement. Just an idea.

I was pretty surprised that after the last houses we sold and bought that we did not receive a gift from the realtors. Your gift to them is a paycheck. If you bought the home, you paid for it in part of the price of the house. If you sold it, then you are well aware of what they received. You can always send her a card to thank her and ask her to give you a bunch of her cards so that you can refer her to other people.

As a Realtor myself I can tell you the best gift you can give are referrals and a testimonial with details of what made your Realtor so special. I've received a couple of gifts from clients (and it makes a huge impact since most people don't do this). A small token gift does make a Realtor feel appreciated, most people don't realize how hard we work. The commissions seem large but if you were to add up the hours we work and the amount we earn you'd realize that we don't make nearly as much as is perceived. In the end...referrals, referrals, referrals are the best gift an agent can receive. Congratulations on your new home, enjoy!

I don't think the gift card is tacky. I'd put a note in it about the coffee maker. If she wants one bad enought, she can get a 20% off BB&B coupon and go get it. Very sweet of you to think of her! Don't forget she did make some cash off your home purchase so don't feel like you need to go overboard. :-)

I agree with the reviews that the best gift you can give your realtor is referrals. We have used the same realtor for the past 3 real estate transactions and each time she gives us a gift since she typically clears around $8,000. We have sent her 5 referrals (we really like her) and each time she sends us an unprompted gift, typically a gift card to a restaurant. Unless, your realtor worked for a reduced commission or you looked at more than 30 houses and took an absorbent amount of her time, you have already paid her. Send her a thank you note and batch of homemade banana bread.

I agree. She is being paid. She should be giving you the gift!
You can help her with a letter as Jenn suggested or by giving her referrals in the future.
