Do sunroofs leak anymore? I don't mean I know a guy who knew a guy, who's next door neighbor's niece heard her boyfriend complaining that his mom's sunroof leaked. I mean like in new cars do they leak, is this still a problem?

I was a teen in the 80s, everyone knew a mess of people who's t top leaked. With sunroofs, same thing. I mean in the 80s and as far as I know good part of the 90s, you would be nuts to own such a creature. Put one in after market, someone would question your sanity!

I am talking about now, when a good number of new cars come off the line with a sunroof, haven't they figured it out? My car before my last CRV had one, it never leaked.

I am asking because if my husband lectures me one more time not to use my sunroof because it will make it leak I am going to less that politely ask him why the hell he thinks that is rational!! I get he was also a teen in the 80s but it has been at least fifteen years since I have heard anyone say their sunroof leaked!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Oh, I have already polled the 10 people in my office that have sunroofs and they say they use their sunroofs and they don't leak!

Riley! Please for the love of god don't ever let my daughter know that. It is everything to restrict her to the subdivision with the standing up and waving like a beauty queen. If she realized you could actually enter and exit the car........

Mine doesn't. I use it all the time. (Well, as much as this city will allow.)
It's my understanding that when you INSTALL a sunroof--it's going to leak.
But the ones installed at the factory--good to go.

I have a sunroof in my SUV and I use it all the time! It's never once leaked!

Now, there was one morning, after it had rained and it was a beautiful day, so I opened it...and the first stop sign I stopped at I had a ton of water come forward from the roof and land on my head, my center console and the passenger seat. (Kids thought it was hilarious!) But that wasn't it leaking...that was me not thinking that there might be puddles of water on the roof of the SUV!

My last vehicle had a sunroof and it never leaked. It was a 1996 (had it until 2009) and I used the heck out of the sunroof. Never as issue.

Sunroofs and convertibles used to leak on a consistant basis.

However manufacturures found out that fixing the leaking problem was much cheaper than having to buy vehicles back under the lemon laws of various states.

The leaking problem was solved by the 90's. Problems become solved and times change.

Good luck to you and yours.

None of ours have and we've had an assortment of cars (brand new to over twelve years old). Sounds like your husband needs to step out of the stone age on this one. :)

I had an after factory sunroof installed in my last car when I bought it new (2004), and it never leaked. It was awesome. For some reason when I bought the next car, I asked for a big fancy roof rack and forgot about the sunroof. And MAN do I miss my sunroof. I have never even ONCE used the damn roof rack I just had to have. But it LOOKS good!

:)

But, yes in the 70s and 80s sunroofs ALWAYS leaked eventually. Especially on my VWs.

My sunroof never leaked - almost every car I owned had one. Never leaked. Unless of course I left it cracked open a bit, and then of course it would rain. Then it would leak.

Going back over the last 15 years or so, and I really can't recall any sunroof leaks in any of our cars.

I think your husband can relax now!

Don't leak. I've driven two brand new cars with them - two different manufacturers, and they're watertight.

I should say forgettable, with the cover on they're so airtight now that you don't even know you have one until the moment you want one to open.

They're nice. And I'm old enough to remember the ones you reference.

Back in the late 80s my Uncle bought a used, Toyota Celica convertible for my Aunt to play in on the weekends. My cousin and I borrowed it one evening to go out, thinking we would look soooooo cool tooling around in it.

Yep, it rained. Damn thing leaked like a sieve. Not so cool when you look liked a drowned cat.

Use your sunroof J. - be cool.

I'd just ignore your hubby and pop that top! Have a great time, because before you know it, it will get cold and you'll forget that you have a sun roof.

I don’t think I knew anyone in the 80's whose T top didn’t leak, lol. I can remember too many times sitting down in a puddle of water. My last car (Ford Expedition) had a sun/moon roof and it did not leak. It was almost 10 years old when I traded it in.

I think the car makers have come a long way so I would not worry about it leaking. Your husband may be worried that the rubber seal will dry out and cause leaks, but that will take time (years unless you live in the desert).

Oh and the new GMC Acadia’s have screens in the sunroofs so the bugs won’t come in. Hubby is renting one since his truck broke down again.
