Hello! I'm interested in getting my real estate license but don't really know where to begin. I'm afraid of scams and sub-par education by just googling sites. Are there agents out there that can point me in the right direction, specifically in Colorado? Any help would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

My husband has his broker's license here in California, and the easiest way to do it is to go to the biggest brokerage in your town (ReMax, Guarantee, Century 21, etc) and ask them what to do. Almost all of them have classes for people who want to be agents. The real estate exam covers all kinds of weird stuff that you'll never need to know as an agent, so you really do need to attend classes in order to pass the test.

I got mine from CU Boulder - took a lot of on-line classes as well from them. Good luck :)

I would suggest going to a reputable agency in your area and ask what they require and where their agents get their training and licenses. I know here there is a state and/or local and a national license to pass. It is VERY HARD to pass, the tests are very expensive, and you have to pay for each test. No do overs. Best of luck to you!

Here is the link from DORA on the steps to be licensed.

It's expensive.

Just to give you an idea...
Schooling: $1500 give or take (I used Jones which is now Kaplan)
Exam: $350 (It's the hardest test in all 50 states, BUT your license is reciprocated in nearly every state, where CO only recognizes a handful of other states' licenses.)
E&O: $300
Realtor Association: $400-500 depending on where you join
Monthly MLS $38
Monthly Brokerage Fee: $50-$1500 Keller Williams to REMax
This is before you earn a single commission....then you need to troll for clients and websites, advertising, brochures, mailings all get very pricey. GL on your decision.

I am in PA so things might be different where you are, but I looked on my local real estate co. websites. They all had a "career" link and they would direct you to a school. Also, I contacted the sales director at my local Coldwell Banker office (I believe they are in CO also) and I went in and spoke to him and he told me how it works. Basically all I have to do is successfully pass the real estate exam after taking the classes and walk into Coldwell Banker (or any other agency) and say "I want to be an agent at your company" and they say OK. You don't have to interview, they just hire you, although, the company really doesn't pay you because you are making your own money. Each company has different commissions though so make sure you find one that works for you. I am holding off on it for now though because my kids are still too young (9 months & 2 yrs) for the hours that you need to put in. Good luck to you!!!!
