Ok ladies I need your help. I have not had to go through this because I inherited my 12 year old son at the age of 5 when his father and I got married. How do you know when your child is ready to be potty trained? My youngest son is 22 months right now. Sometimes when he goes to the bathroom he grabs himself and askes "What's that". You can ask him if he is stinky and he will grab himself then also. He hides when he is pooping because he doesn't want us watching him. So how do I know if he is ready to start training yet? I have a little potty for him in front of ours. Sometimes he will sit on it with his diaper on but that is about it. I put him on it one day right before I put him in the tub. He sat there for a few seconds then wanted to get up. The moment I put him in the tub he stood there and pee'd.

What can I do next?

J.,
You are doing a great job. I agree with these moms who say give it a try and see what happens. I've worked in child care for a very long time. Potty training for the last 8 years. I've learned that what you are doing now is just introducing the concept to him, and he'll get it. If it becomes frustrating, back off alittle, keep potty chair out and ask if he wants to go the way you are now. If he's ready, it'll happen. If not, that's ok. Don't pressure him, praise him for trying, but don't just wait til he's 3 either.
If it takes him til he's 3 to decide than that's ok too.
Good luck, you're doing a great job.

Personally I would wait until he's closer to 3, for your nerves- it's a long process. Arm yourself first though- go to a Half Price and get a book on potty training or you can use the Dr. Phil approach- just Google Dr. Phil Potty Training. It's a one day approach (honestly more like a week- they do have accidents) based on praise and more importantly repitition. I had tried a couple of others, but liked it best.

I tried when my son was doing the exact thing yours is. He wasn't ready. We were all frustrated. I gave up, then when he was around 2 1/2 he told me he wanted to tee tee on the potty. We haven't looked back since.

I say wait til they start telling you they want to. Leave the potty out, but don't press the issue. Enjoy the diaper phase, at least you don't have to drop everything and rush to the potty in the middle of the store!!!

Why not give it a try. Just take a weekend follow some potty training guide. If it works great if not then you back off and try again later. I did the 3 day potty training guide and it said 22 months is the perfect age to start. I did't start my daughter until she was 26 months old, but it was so easy I wish I had done it earlier.
