Some schools.... have supplemental reading help groups for kids. Therefore, it is free.
Being it is a part of the school's programs or via the State's public schools reading assistance programs.

Check with your child's Teacher first... or the school.

Did the Teacher say she needs help?
Start with the Teacher....

First -- does your daughter's teacher believe she needs professional tutoring? If so, absolutely proceed, but if you haven't discussed it with the teacher yet -- I would definitely do so before getting a tutor. It's hard to know from the post whether the teacher believes your daughter has a problem that does require extra intervention now, or whether the teacher hasn't indicated this but you and your husband want to see her reading better and for some reason can't work with her yourselves, with the teacher's guidance, at home.

Be aware that many tutoring services, especially the large national companies that have local franchises, can be good but also do have a vested interest in keeping students as long as possible. So if your daughter really mostly needs a short-term boost, you may find yourself pressed to keep her going and going to tutoring beyond what she needs (again -- what does the teacher and/or the school's reading specialist say she needs?). One possible place to seek tutoring help is at a local university with an early childhood education department; sometimes those departments offer programs for tutoring that are less expensive because they use graduate students to do the tutoring. I've had friends who had kids doing reading lessons through a local university and it worked out very well for them.

I would talk to the teacher and the school and see what they think. I know several schools that have "Everyone' s a Reader" or other programs like that. She might also be elgible for services if she has a IEP.

My friend went to the Sylvin, (sp) in Encinitas and had wonderful refults with them.

Good luck!

Try your local college. I have found great students that tutor.

Have you been notified that your daughter needs tutoring? If so, doesn't you school provide tutoring afterschool.

Our schools provide afterschool tutoring in groups with the teachers.

If you need outside tutoring, i would shy away from the large businesses who "tutor' because they are there to make $$ and $$ is their #1 goal.

Secondly with our school system, it is preferred that children do not go to the tutoring businesses because they teach a different way than the school does and sometimes you end up with an even more confused child.

That said, talk to your child's teacher and guidance counselor to get recommendations for a good tutor. MANY teachers tutor on the side (around here it is $50+/hr), many teachers who are SAHM's now tutor on the side as well. Your child's teacher and guidance counselor should have a good list of available tutors for you to speak with and set things up.

Good luck
