Reading Material

Hi ladies!
Ok I have to questions. 1. I used to pick up a copy of Dallas Child magazine at the central Garland library, but they don't have them there anymore, then I found it at the north branch and again its gone. Does anyone know where in Garland I can find copies, I love the mag and feel so out of touch without it.
2. I am looking for advice on some new books to read. I love to read and have read most things by my favorite authors, and now am at a loss for what to read. I really like suspensful, well written books with characters that are well developed. I grew up reading Stephen King and Ann Rice. Any suggestions of books or even authors to check out would be soooo appreciated!
Thanks! and have a great week!
A.

Suggestions from a former bookstore manager:

Stay away from newer Dean Koontz, although Intensity was quite good

H.P. Lovecraft (author) "Twilight Zone" older, pulp-horror type stuff, but not cheesey

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova PHENOMENAL Everything you want in a vampire book and everything you want a Dan Brown bok to be (ie it's a page turner but has significant character development w/ detailed, thorough description)

Neal Stephenson (author) Cryptonomicon: fantastic code-breaking thriller set during WWII and present day. Lots of science & heavy math, but you don't need to have a degree in either to think it's a great book.

If you just want a fun book that's throught provoking and funny, deals with family dysfunction in a beautiful way, I would recommend either of the Mark Haddon books (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and A Spot of Bother). Haddon is a former poet who uses a perfect paucity of words to get across his point.

If you like kind of Blair Witch-style spooky books, Mark Danielewski is good (his sister is the singer/songwriter Poe).

If you're a bit of a Gen Xer Douglas Coupland rings true to a lot of late 20 to early 30-somethings.

Some cheesier Vampire books, but quick, fun reads are those by Laurell K Hamilton. Stay away from the Meredith Gentry series by Hamilton, though. Not fun reads, in my opinion.

Also, sign up for Borders rewards at www.bordersstores.com. They'll send you great coupons & no spam.

Happy reading!

I don't know if you know this or not, but Dallas Child has a website too. www.dallaschild.com. It has lots of info on it - I was just using it yesterday! Anyway, they may have info on where to find their mags, or at least somewhere you can contact them. I love Dallas Child too!

I too love to read and do enjoy Stephen King & Ann Rice. I was getting tired of them and read most of what they have. Lately I been enjoying a series by Janet Evanovich that are numbered such as "one for the Money" two for XXX; 3 for XXX etc., etc. and she is currently up to #12, I have laugh & cry when I read these. They are easy to read, light hearted & fun. I also enjoy Dean Koontz - all of his books are good as well. Right now I'm reading "EAT, PRAY & LOVE" - by Gilbert - it's currently on the NY Times best seller list.

You can get the dallas child magazine online at dallaschild.com if you'd like. There's a link to archives on the left hand side where you can get old issues. -jm
