I have been hunting for an appropriate song to dance with my son at his
Wedding. There is one in particular that I just adore and he will remember it also
and that song is "Puff, the Magic Dragon by Peter,Paul and Mary.
Is this song to corny and silly to dance too ? I would like some solid honest answers and not hurtful.
Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

Thank You so much for the enormous response from you all. All of your suggestions were so heart warming and very honest. I appreciate them all. I met with the happy couple last night with the news of" the poor Dragon" ! Well my son said that was just between him and I and he didn't think anyone would understand what it meant to us. So we settled for the song. "A Song for My Son",By Micki.
The person that gave me the link to her singing the song made the decision for us. We had heard it sung by another singer and it was so bad. So thanks for the suggestion. I didn't expect so many of you to care. You are all Great Moms..............

it is such a sad song. isn't it about a little boy who keeps visiting the dragon and then he gets too old to play and doesn't visit anymore?? :( A dragon lives forever but not so little boys. Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys. One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more. And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.. His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain, Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

If it's a song that's sentimental to you and your son, I wouldn't be concerned with what other people think. Chances are, it will evoke all kinds of memories for many people in the audience who grew-up to the song.

You can always have the DJ or one of the family members read an intro about why the song was chosen and its meaning prior to starting the dance.

My husband and I did a lot of non-traditional things for our wedding, and I'm glad we did because they made it special for us. For instance, our vows were Top 10 Lists of why we wanted to marry each other. His were very sweet and endearing. Mine were really humorous. I'm sure my mother was embarrassed and his mother was mortified, but it was about how we wanted to start our marriage - it was exactly what we wanted it to be.

Good luck.

"Sunrise, Sunset"
Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
I don't remember growing older,
When did they?

When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn't it yesterday when they were small?

Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset,
Swiftly flow the days,
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming even as they gaze . . .

Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset!
Swiftly fly the years,
One season following another,
Laden with happiness and tears . . .

If it means a lot to you then just ask him. He may think it is a great idea. I went to the fanciest, swankiest wedding years ago, and you know what I remember ? How awesome their song choices were. Here we are at the fanciest Hotel in CT, the Bride is wearing a $10,000 gown, the flowers cost more then my honeymoon, and They walked down the aisle to Eye of the Tiger, from Rocky. It was classic :)

Hi B.,

It does give away your age, lol, but it gives mine away as well. If it is something that will mean something to your son and something that will be fun sharing with others when they ask, then I think it is a perfectly good choice. If it's corny or silly, so what. As long as it's okay with your son..and might want to check with his bride...then why not?

I agree that if it means something to you and your son, and your son and his fiancee are both on board with it, then go for it. Although, you may want to try dancing to it together before you settle on it. If I remember correctly, it might be kind of an awkward tempo for dancing to.

Well, it is a sweet song and if it is meaningful to you both then by all means, dance to it. However, the song is on the "young" side and may provoke some unwanted criticism or teasing from your sons buddies. As for additional suggestions, I've heard, "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion, "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart, "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong, "In My Life" by The Beatles, "Through the Years" by Kenny Rogers, "A Song for Mama" by Boyz II Men, "You are the Sunshine of My Life" by Stevie Wonder, etc.

If you can't decide, ask him which song he'd like. You can also ask the band or DJ which are the popular choices. Or just cut loose and dance to a faster song - Bee Gees, Temptations or one of my favorites, "Some Kind of Wonderful" by Grand Funk Railroad. Any song you choose, the purpose of the Mother/Son dance is to show appreciation, remembrance and a rite of passage as you've let him go to start his own family.

Good luck!

Choose a song that has meaning for you and your song. After all, you will always remember this dance. Think about one of your favorite bands or something from the era of your son's childhood (my sister chose Fleetwood Mac's Landslide because they were one of my father's favorite bands since we were little). But also, take into consideration your future daughter in law. If she is planning her dream wedding and agonizing over every detail, then she may want something more classic; but if she's OK with this sweet, although silly, song because it has meaning for you both, well then you are very lucky indeed!!!

I don't think it's silly, but I would check with the bride and groom first. If the wedding is very formal, maybe it wouldn't work? If it is more casual (like ours was), it could be fun!

Go for it! If it means something special to you and your son, then I see no reason not to. It's a non-traditional wedding song, and the guests will always remember that you and your son danced to it every time they hear it.

I see 2 ways...

If it's a formal, traditional wedding you may want to consider something else, or talk with the bride about it.

If it's a song that is special to the 2 of you, then go for it. This is your special moment and it should be what you want.

Oh B.,
Your letter really touched me.
My daddy sang that song to me when I was a little girl and it certainly brings back memories.
Also, I have a son and it got me to thinking what song we would dance to. We have so many favorites. After all, I spent his life dancing in the living room with him and taught him the proper way to hold a lady's hand and place his other hand in the small of her back and how to gently lead.
If this song is truly special to the both of you, talk to him about it and see what he thinks.
I have a sense of humor and so does my son. I'm not saying I'd want it for our "official" dance, but I know for a fact he would be down with dancing to Radar Love by Golden Earring. That was his first favorite "rock" song and used to sing it at the top of his lungs from the backseat on our car trips. And in the shower. He would pretend he was shifting gears and say we had "radar" love.
We actually do. We are very close.
Weddings are so sentimental. If this means a lot to you, talk to him about it and if he doesn't mind, who cares what anyone else thinks.
If I danced with my son to all of our favorites, his bride would not get a dance in edgewise. :)
I can't wait to dance with my grandchildren.

These things are so personal and whatever is special for you and your son is what you should do.

I would suggest I Hope You Dance, by LeeAnn Womack, Lullaby (Goodnight My Angel) by Billy Joel, "Your Song" by Elton John. Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce is also super wonderful.
I'm a sentimental sap. I cry helping my friends' sons get ready to go to the prom.
I've raised my son myself and we both know full well, if we do something deep and teary, we will have to follow it up immediately with busting a move to Best of My Love by the Emotions or something uplifting to keep me from crying. There are too many pictures of me and my son dancing at weddings from the time he was tiny....not to steal anything from his day or moment, but I can promise he and I will have something planned for our dance at his wedding. But that's just how we are.

Have fun and do what is special to you both.
Let us know what you decide and how it goes.
I know what a touching and special time this is for you.

I think you and your son can dance to what you want to - make sure it's fine with him. I'm not sure it's necessary for you to seek the bride's approval - hopefully HE will inform her and hopefully she will respect his choice and his relationship with you. I don't think the bride should be in charge of every aspect of the wedding - I would think she wouldn't want that pressure. Also, I hope that both bride and groom are in agreement on major things (like the content of the ceremony) and then are willing to be flexible on smaller issues (flavor of the cake, songs for various dances).

If the song is meaningful to you both and would not evoke sadness but more of a nostalgia for the days of his youth which are now gone, then it's fine. I agree you should play it a few times and actually practice dancing to it to be sure it works for you. I think it's nice for the DJ to announce why different songs were chosen for various dancers - wedding guests will find this helpful.

Sunrise Sunset is a common song for any parent of either the bride or the groom. It's a waltz tempo so be sure you can dance in 3/4 time!
