Re-use God Parents??

We cant seem to figure out who should be our baby's God parents. We have already used our siblings and want to use immidiate family only, no in laws or friends. My cousins arent Catholic, my husband isnt close with any of his, so we thought maybe we could use our siblings again? Does that sound stupid? We would draw out of a hat so no one felt slighted. Im not sure what else to do. Does anyone have the same person for God parents of more than one of thier children? My husband and i both have only one God parent due to divorce of the couple who was chosen, so we want to avoid that. Thats how we came up with family only.

it makes more sense actually...from my years in catholic school k-college I was taught the role of a godparent is supposed to be in case you both can;t care for your kids they will, and they will rasie them in the catholic church...so it makes more sense actually if they have the same godparent...unless you want to split them up should something happen?

Dear mommy-

Absolutely 'we' recycled god parents...too few catholic friends...my family (and catholic friends) were in fact honored to be called upon more than once!

Best Luck!

I'm laughing at the title of your post! Recycling godparents - what a concept! :^D

But my dear Catholic friend tells me that having the same godparent for more than one child is perfectly fine, as long as that person is willing to live up to the godparenting responsibilities for more than one child.

All three of my boys have the same Godfather. Like you, there were pretty slim pickings for available men in our family. Both of our sisters were divorced and there weren't many other men my husband or I were close too. They all have different Godmothers, but the same Godfather. And it's fine that way, he was happy to do it and my boys love him.
Best of luck.

That is absolutely fine. I too, feel that godparents should be for immediate family. So, if we had a 4th baby, we would be re-using godparents.

We had different for ours, but my brother had me as the Godmother of both of his girls and his wife's brother as the Godfather of both girls. I think it's just fine to re-use.

We are not Catholic, but I chose godparents because I wanted the people who will get her if we die to have a special relationship with her. I would have the same godparents for all my children for this reason.

Why do children need to have different godparents? My 4 children all have my brother as a godfather. Our oldest son has a good friend as his godmother, and the other 3 have my DH's cousin. It was important to us for them to have practicing Catholics for godparents. Our friends are all either not Catholic, not practicing, or we don't feel close enough to them to ask. My DH only has 1 cousin that is Catholic, and while I have 50 (not a typo), none of them live in this country.
Just chose the people you want and don't worry about it :)

I am in the same boat, kind of. I just have a while to go to actually get to that point. I am not at all close to my godparents. No one in my family is even though they are blood relatives. Better than thou attitude. I wanted to avoid that with my kids. No such luck. We have not spoken to my son's in years (since just after the baptism actually), have very little to do with one of my girl's godparents. It is very frustrating. We may just ask my brother to be godparent to the baby when it comes and that is it. He is godfather to my youngest. My brother in law has all 3 of his boys with the same god parents.

I am Catholic and I used my sister for my son and then when we had the twins they have 4 godmothers and 1 godfather (my 2 sisters, my best friend, my SIL and her husband). I say go for it, use who you two want to.

We will run out of our siblings if we have 4 kiddos....and we plan to have 5 kids (God willing)...so we will have to reuse as well. I think drawing out of a hat sounds fair. We will likely reuse my sister (I only have 1 sib) for baby #5 when the time comes but putting the guys names in a hat and drawing sounds like a great option! My hubby is Godfather to 2 of his nephews by the same couple (they have 4 kiddos)...so it happens.

We aren't Catholic, but we are Christian. We are God parents to all 3 of our friend's kids...and they plan to adopt. Woohoo. Lol.
I see it as a win-win for all involved.
I say go for it. :)
HTH!

I don't see it as a problem. If you love the god-parents and feel they would be the best people for your children, then by all means---pick them again! I kind of find it strange to have different people be god-parents to different siblings. JMO

I have two brothers and my husband has three sisters so that helped a lot. My kid brother and my husband's middle sister are my 1st daughter's Godparents. My kid brother was so excited, and takes it so seriously that he only wanted to be Godfather once. My first brother and my husband's eldest sister are my 2nd daughter's Godparents.

With my 3rd daughter it was harder. We wanted to make sure that family was still her Godparents, but it was very important to me that my best friend also be her Godmother. However my best friend is not Catholic. She was and is practicing in her denomination, so she was a Christian Witness for my daughter and my first brother is one of her Godfathers. We knew that could cause a problem on my in-law's side so we once again chose my husband's eldest sister as a Godmother plus her husband as a second Godfather. Her youngest child also has 4 Godparents so it wasn't really unusual for us to do the same. :-) And no one questioned us not using my husband's youngest sister at all.

our title of Godparent isn't as serious as yours due to our limited religous beliefs, but we are re-using ours for baby #2. I don't see why it would be a problem as long as those chosen are ok with it. some people take the responsibility very seriously and may not want to added pressure, but if they are just there for support etc I would say- absolutely!!

I never really asked anybody to be my 2 daughters godparents... when I was pregnant with my son, my fiance and I had a small cookout and asked our BFFs to be our son's godparents. They were so touched! Everyone cried and clapped and it was wonderful... they accepted, but only if they could be godparents to the girls as well :) So yes, I would say it's acceptable... do what you feel is right for YOU :)
