My son, 14 months old, has a rash. It comes and goes. He always has a fine raised rash on most of his body, but sometimes, he gets larger bumps too. It occurs on his face, hands, legs and torso. Also, on his neck. He scratches at it even in his sleep. I took him to the doctor a month ago, when it started. He gave me eucerin cream and body wash. I have tried going back to using Dreft on his clothes like when he was really little. Everything I put on him is hypoallergenic. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? It hurts me to see him so uncomfortable.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all your responses. We went back to the doctor today. It seems the initial rash was not there. This rash is caused by scabies! Luckily, the doctor said this is easily treated with medicine. We think he may have gotten it from a cousin over the holiday. I hope none of you have to endure this. Thanks again for all the advice!

I am a mom of 4 and a Registered Dietitian, so my first thought was a food allergy. High allergen foods are strawberries, peanut butter, milk and nuts. You could also try a daily dose of Zyrtec or Claritin-- just a thought. I know at 14mths it is so hard because they can't tell you what is going on! You could also consider taking him to an allergist. Good Luck!

THis sounds like an allergy. I would give him a dose of benadryl and see if that helps. Most importantly I would be back at the doctor. Anytime you take him to the dr. and the treatment they give you isn't really working withing 3 to 5 days. GO BACK. They don't know it wasn't successful unless you tell them. My son had topical rashes and welps from food allergies. Red food dye was a big culprit and it is in so many things that aren't even red. If he is scratching and it is all over his body, this is more than dry skin. If you don't like what the pediatrician says, get him to a dermatologist right away. and get an apointment with an allergist. I would start a diary of everything he wears, eats etc. all of his activities, what brands of things you are using. How his skin reacts etc. I know that it is time consuming, but it will help you and the dr. recognize triggers. have you recently changed him from formula to milk? Dairy allergies manafest in alot of different ways. Does he have a runny nose? this can be a sign of food allergies as well. Good luck

The first thing you should do is take your child to see the pediatrician. The rash could be a number of things, eczema, allergies or even something rheumatic. My five month old has severe eczema and we have to be very careful with the lotions and detergents we use on him. Even cataphyll broke my little guy out. You have gotten a lot of great responses but before you try anything you should go to your pediatrician. Your child is old enough to have allergy testing done which can be pretty simple, food challenges for milk, peanuts, etc. And skin testing for environmental causes such as grass, dust, etc. I hope that this helps you. Also before you start using lots of lotions you might want to check out www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.

I have three kids and all of them had this problem. Our Dr. told us to use the Dove body wash, just make sure we did not get it in their eyes, and Cetaphil lotion. He said to use these and not to change the laundry detergent, I use Tide. Just making these changes helped a lot. It only took a couple of baths and their skin was clearing up. Their skin actually felt a lot better after the first bath.
Also, I did by the generic brands to save some money, they worked just as well. I hope this helps!

Switch to non-toxic products for his bath and for your laundry and home cleaning. If that doesn't work, it could be food allergies. Check my website for safe, natural products, and be sure to read labels. Lots of companies that claim to be natural, really aren't.

Well my son broke out with Dreft so not as gentle as one might think. Hypoallergenic and non-txoci are two different things.

Change to non toxic detergents, fabric softener, NO BLEACH, dishwashing detergents and all household cleaners. I am with Shaklee and my son's rash is exactly what lead me to them. www.wellnessiseasy.com

Shampoo, conditioner, even lotions need to be changed. California Baby is a good one. www.californiababy.com

Wash all of his sheets and blankets (even toys)in a non toxic product.

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I would get a second opinion!! Sounds like he's having an allergic reaction to something. Is he outside a lot?? I would get him tested for allergies. Good Luck, and I hope you get this figured out soon! I feel so sorry for kids when they are like that, you know they are miserable!

Hey J., you might want to take him to an allergist, sounds like it might be a food allergy, if it is he will continue to break out because it's something he's ingesting instead of topical. the cream will help with the outward piece but won't take care of the cause of the rash....good luck...R.

i have heard this a million times and here is the best advice, if i do say so myself. do not bathe him everyday. start with every 3rd day give him a guick bath. i can almost promise this will work. i have had several kids in my daycare that have had the same problems and when their moms' quit bathing them everyday, it went away. my pediatrician told me this when my first baby was born. i wipe their bottoms everyday with a warm wet cloth and lotion them so they are not smelly! my children have beautiful skin. at least try it, God puts oil on their skin and then we, as mothers, wash it off. good luck!

Could your son be allergic to some foods? Mine were atopic kids so they would break into rashes due to some foods. A mild steriod creme (Betamil with active ingredient Betamethasone) seemed to help dramatically in reducing rashes and itching. Also, during season change, they sometimes had rashes. Cold can also do it to them, so keep him moisturized. I found Aquaphor (like vaseline) very effective. Bleach on clothes also caused rashes, so I avoided bleach and used Dreft till they turned 3.

It could be from a couple of different things. It could be from allergic reaction to chemicals and also food allergy. I would change the products that I bathe him in and anything that I put on his skin. Arbonne has a great baby line that is all natural. Ck out website at www.successfromtheheart.myarbonne.com. Definitely, use Dreft for laundry. Start watching foods and see if it gets worst. Sometimes juices are acidic and can cause allergies,

J.,

Like the others have said, it sounds like an allergy. My children and I suffer from allergies. The doctor calls it allergic dermatitis and eczema. We all suffer from skin rashes in my family.

Like the others have mentioned, using dreft isn't always helpful with allergies. My mother washed a bunch of my son's clothes in Dreft while I was in the hospital and it bothered me and the baby. I now wash the whole families clothes in ALL --allergen free and fragrance free laundry detergent or Arm n Hammer fragrance free. This seems to help me and the baby.

We avoid anything with scents or fragrances candles, sprays, etc. I use the fragrance free baby wipes. I use cetaphil soap recommended to me by a dermatologist in st. louis. Aquaphor is great, and also recommended by the dermatologist, to apply within 3 minutes of bathing. This helps, ecspecially in these dry winter months.

You may want to get your son in to a dermatologist, they seemed to offer more help with the skin rash than the actual allergist.

Good Luck J. let us know how everything goes!

This sounds exactly like my daughter. She has had the same symtoms.

The Doctors call it dermatitis, but I know that it is Eczema. I have a family history of it. She is 2 1/2 now and has out grown some of her
symptoms, but she still has very sensative skin and dry, itchy patches all over with rashes. We only use Dreft on her clothes and I do not use any
regular soaps on her.

A nurse suggested glycerin (you can find it in the pharmacy) to help at and after bath time (you can use it in place of soap) and this seems to help. I also use Gentle Naturals eczema body wash on her.
I can only find this at Target in the baby wash section and on drugstore.com. From birth until
about 1 1/2 had this on her scalp.

Her pediatrician recommended that I use a dandruff shampoo-Selsun Blue-for her. Be very careful if you try this!
It will sting intensly on any open sore! Since her rash looked the same from
head to toe, I have used the shampoo on her whole body from time to time.
I do not use perfumes or items with strong scents around her. This seems to set off her rash. Even the Johnsons product line
irritated her. Eucerine lotion worked the best-for awhile. We had perscriptions for hydrocortozone Which worked better. I kept asking for Elidel, but was denied until I told the that my mom had shared my nieces' perscription and it was working on clearing her skin.

I have noticed that ketchup, ranch dressing and apple juice will cause a breakout. Foods
With high acidity seem to trigger a break out in my niece as well.

Be careful with any medications, even over th counter meds like Benadryl. I would consult your
Pediatrician before giving any dose of Benadryl since the packaging does not give instructions for
children under 2. There have been reports of children dying of an overdose of Benadryl.
