Rash on Newborns Neck

Hello,
I need some advice on my infants skin in the folds of her neck. She has about 25 chins....hahaha...and the skin folds are red and kinda wet. It looks very irritated. I try to keep them dry but it doesn't seem to help. She doesn't really throw up alot so it isn't from that. And the other day when I wiped it there was a spot of blood. So it must not feel very good. My mom told me to put corn starch on it to keep it dry. I told her I didn't want to make gravy or muffins in her neck...hahaha. Then she suggested using A and D ointment. That is just a diaper rash cream. Maybe I will try it if someone else says the same thing. I would like some suggestions before I decide to take her to the doctor. I seem to go in for dumb little things and they take my $25 bucks and tell me it is nothing. So any advice before I waste more money would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice. I decided to use the neosporin because it seemed to be more of a sore than a rash. It cleared up in one application. I will also try the corn starch in the future since it was so highly recommended. I am also getting a sample of the Arbonne baby products that were also recommended. thanks again for the help

Hi D.! Sorry you're having to go through this with your daughter. But, I totally know what you're going through. My 3-month-old son is already more than 15 lbs! So, we're definitely dealing with the double chins too. Haha! :)
I've found that Arbonne's Baby Care (ABC) line of skincare products really helps keep it under control. ABC products are hypoallergenic, pH balanced with no chemical dyes or fragrances, no mineral oil, and no animal by-products. They are wonderful for extremely delicate, sensitive skin. If you're interested in checking them out, please feel free to visit my website at: www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com. And, I'd be happy to send you a FREE sample to try for your daughter. Just let me know. Good luck!
Take care and have a wonderful day!

Your mom's idea is a good one. Rashes develop in the diaper area when it gets wet and stays wet for too long. I've seen tons of babies get the same thing under the chin due to drooling. Starch/powder gets gross since there is so much more drool. I would recommend any diaper rash cream to prevent the problem. Personally, I use Butt Paste, I don't remeber who makes it, but that's what it called. Seriously, one application, the rash is gone.

You should listen to your mother, corn starch is the right treatment....clean and dry the folds they brush on the corn starch...it helps neutralize the area and help take away the redness, it could get worse and infected if ignored. You could try diaper rash cream as well. It is an irritation at this point. Try hard to keep the area dry and clean. hope this helps.

My baby's allergist told us to use Vanicream -- she said it's the safest and least allergenic lotion available, plus it works. good luck!

My chubby son had the same problem. I was told to put neosporin on it. It seemed to work just fine for him. Also make sure you keep it clean which I am sure you do.

I know what you mean about going to the doctor all the time but I did take my daughter in for the same thing. She gets the same rash on her neck, wrists and the fingers she sucks on.

The doctor prescribed a Hydrocortison Ointment and the rash goes away within hours. This medicine really helps keep moisture off as well as heal the area.

As a mother of 4 adult children and 10 grandbabies. I've always used diaper rash cream. Mom's right
just keep an eye on it it can turn into a yeast infection
your doing a good job on keeping it dry as much as possible
you might need to have baby's physician call in some nyastatin powder works great (watch for creamy off white/yellow looking junk other then drool and odor)

good luck

Since she's only two months old, I doubt the problem is from drool. Most babies don't start drooling in earnest until they are teething. If she's getting this redness in the folds of her neck, it's probably from sweat. She might be overheated. Try dressing her a little lighter or taking off one layer of blankets at night.

Here's some info on heat-rashes:

Whatever you do, don't wipe the skin with a wet-wipe. The acid in the wipe will sting her like crazy. Instead, cleanse her there with a warm wash cloth and dry THOROUGHLY.

As far as treatment goes, I agree with your mom that corn starch might make things a little better. But, in this case, I think finding the cause is more important than the treatment.

Best of luck to you!

Hi D.

My 5 month old daughter had the same problem.... including a little blood. Her pediatricion told me to put "Butt Paste" on it. IT WORKED... you can buy it Wal-Mart or Target. Target has it by the plastic jar more quantity for less than $20. I use it on every diaper change also and she never gets a diaper rash either!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the BUTT PASTE !!! Good luck

D.,
Read your labels!!!! If the products that you have or want to use have fragrance or mineral oil, they will irratate the skin even more.
Mineral oil is like liquid seran wrap. I sufficates the skin! Please be careful.

Have you ever heard of Arbonne? Their products are the best for babies. I am an independant consultant for Arbonne and I help mothers all of the time to learn about a safer product for their babies and the rest of the family :).

I would be happy to send you a sample.

D.,
I think your mom has the right idea. I'd substitute talc (baby powder) for the cornstarch. If this makes her sticky, try a skin protector such as vaseline instead. A & D ointment may work very well. Both protect the skin from moisture. If the area is so irritated that it's bleeding you really have to do something about it - but don't go to the doctor - it's a lot cheaper to just call the office and see if you can get advice over the phone.
Good luck
