Rash on Face

My 20 month old has always had sensitive skin, and a few patches of Eczema here and there. About a month ago she developed a small rash on her cheek, near the corner of her mouth and it won't go away. We just moved and haven't established a doctor yet and are also in the process of establishing new insurance, so I haven't taken her to see anyone about it. It is a circle (smaller then a dime), very red, and most of the time it is dry & flakey. Every once in a while it gets a little weepy though. It doesn't seem to respond to ointments or creams, in fact it seems to aggravate it. Over the past month it has started to go away, but then it comes back. It has not spread, no one else in our family has caught it, and it doesn't seem to bother her. Does anyone know what this might be or what I can do about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Wow! You ALL have been SOOOOO helpful. I have so many ideas floating around in my head now that I don't know where to start!! But I TRULY appreciate the help!!!! I had a tube of Nystatin from when she had a yeast infection as an infant, so I tried that last night & again this morning. I think maybe it is yeast because it appears to be drying up. I don't know for sure though because it will take a few more days if thats really what it is. You all have given me so many great ideas about natural products to try though, I probably should start looking more into going natural. I'm sure that there are many things I could cut out of her diet (and out of my household) that would help eliminate her skin problems. You guys are the best!

My middle child was born with it all over her face and backs of her legs and ankles. I tryed everything with her and nothing worked. I felt really bad for her since I know how it feels. I get it on my legs every time I get preg. This last time I got it really bad and tryed the new Cortizone-10 with aloe. One night after her bath I had the Thought to try it on her face. I am proud to say that after 2mths it's all gone. I did learn to put it on her after she went to sleep though so she would leave it alone. Hope it helps!

My son is 2 1/2 and has eczema, allergies and asthma. He had the
same problem as an infant along with spitting up after each feeding. I discovered he was senstive to the cow's milk formula we were giving him. We switched him to soy milk and wallah, problem solved.

If it is Eczema, or even if not possibly, you might try an ointment called Resinol. Wal-green's and other pharmacy stores carry it over the counter. It has been the one thing that helps me with treating acute eczema flare-ups.

I would treat for ringworm for a few days to see if it fades. If it does then continue treatment for about 10 days. Just get some over the counter athletes foot cream and apply it lightly to the area until blended in. It won't hurt her if it's not ringworm and if it is it will get rid of it!
Good Luck.
If it doesn't work or you don't feel comfortable treating it yourself I would make it a priority to get to a doctor.

you need to get it checked out your dauther might have ringworm. You can go to the pharmacy and ask for over the counter anti-fungal ointment

My daughter also has eczema, and from what I know is not contagious. I am not sure I can be of much help because my daughter is 5 already and she started since she was 2 and your baby is only 20 mos. But I use oatmeal body wash or some kind of baby body wash with no perfume; I also use ucerin lotion that you can practically get at any drug store like rite aid or walgreens, it is a little spendy though, I just bought a family size bottle for more than $12.00. Hope that helps. I am also from Southern California, I've been living in Oregon for 11 years.

Hi there,
Have you ever heard of Melaleuca? The oil is from Australia and it is an anti fungal. Wonderful stuff! Also they have a lotion that is called Renew and it heals eczema! You can go to my website at healthyhome.womensdreamteam.com for more info!
You will be thrilled with all the nontoxic products! J.

Try Aquaphor...It works great!

I agree with others, it may be ringworm. It also may be an oral yeast infection. I had one for about a year and had a rash by the corner of my mouth -not always touching it. If nothing else, some good acidopholous culture will be good for her and help if it's yeast related.

V.,
I have 3 friends completely eliminate eczema from their lives. My friend Jane's 2 1/2 year old son had the same patches on her face...she got rid of the chemicals in her house and buys Melaleuca products. Brock's eczema was gone w/in 1 week. My friend Marie who's 32 years old, has had eczema since she was 4...in a year of her house using only natural Melaleuca products....she herself, for the first time in her life, has never had an eczema breakout. My son's cradle cap went away within 3 days. If you are using J&J Babywash I would stop that one immediately. Let me know if you have any more questions. It's tough w/ creams aggravating it and I wish you best of luck!
