Hi All - My 6 month old son has his two lower teeth 1/2 way in and drools constantly! For the past month and 1/2 he has had a red, bumpy rash on his chin and neck (the rash started before we introduced solids). He scratches at it occasionally. I assume it is from all the pooling drool. Any suggestions on how to treat this rash to make him more comfortable? Thank you!

We had the same problem with my oldest son... And it lasted the entire time he was getting in teeth! My grandpa actually told me to use vaseline... It was amazing! The baby's rash cleared up and the remedy was not expensive! Good luck!

My daughter used to get a small rash too. I would poke open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the oil on her skin. This usually took care of it.

Our daughter had a similar rash when she was around the same age. You may want to have your ped take a look at it. We had tried several things that our doc had recommended including diaper cream. Nothing helped and she ended up with the start of a yeast infection in the folds of her neck. We used a combination of an anti-fungal cream and a hydrocortizone cream and it cleared up in just a couple of days. You have to use a VERY SMALL amount of both--tip of a pencil lead size. Good luck!

The key on drool rashes is to keep the area dry. Chin bibs work well for catching drool, and regular bibs can work too- just change the bibs when they get wet.

Hi Maggie,

Homeopathy is incredibly valuable for skin rashes. Many excellent pediatric practitioners in the Twin Cities.

My daughter has a similar problem, but the rash is around her mouth and mostly from her pacifier. Our pediatrician recommended washing the area frequently and then applying vaseline or chap stick to form a barrier on her skin. The idea is that the vaseline will not allow the acidic saliva to get to her skin. This has really helped us out. Personally, I would shy away from creams that treat certain things (ie. yeast, anti-inflammatory, etc...), until you talk with your pediatrician first. You don't want to "treat" a problem that isn't actually a problem (if you know what I mean).

If you breastfeed, put some breastmilk right on the rashy area. Breastmilk does all sorts of amazing things!

my boys never had that problem but a friend of mine's daughter did and her pediatrician recommended putting corn starch on it.

His drool is acrid which is causing the rash. Switch to a non-corn syrup based formula to reduce the acid level in his drool and throughout his body.

This symptom is topical, however is an indication that something else is wrong... the food you give him is the key. While you are at it switch to a formula that is organic and non-gmo/anti-biotic free. Go to www.safebaby.com for products you can buy and information to help you learn more.

To treat the rash directly in the mean time, a teaspoon of cider vinegar in a bowl of warm water applied with a cotton wash cloth several times each day will neutralize the ph so that the rash is soothed and goes away temporarily.

Corn Starch is not an option because it forces more corn (the problem) into the body.

DO NOT USE CORTEZONE creams Maggie ~ they won't solve the problem and have side effects. All cream will trap the rash and either make it worse or produce internal effects. Please check out safe options at www.safebaby.com.

Hi,
What I found worked the best for my son with all the drool during tetthing was the nipple cream (pure lanolin). A little goes a long way and you don't have to worry if it gets in their mouth because that is what it is made for. He also got very dry hands from sucking on them from teething, I would put the lanolin on it and it really helped clear it up.

My son used to have a horrible rash like that from sucking on his pacifier. When he didn't have it in his mouth we would put eucerin creme on it. It really seemed to help.

I found that desitin clear works wonders!! I would put it on before bed and in the morning for a few days. It acts like a protective barrier against moisture...the same reason you put it on diaper rash. Desitin clear has no odor or residue so no one will know your baby has diaper cream on its face :)

My doctor told me that it is a form of yeast just on their face from all the drool. I didn't ask what to put on it but I see the others have suggested corn starch. I would start with that. Maybe a minimum amount of yeast cream will work as well.

My grandson, 5 months old, had the same thing. My daughter washes his neck often and puts vaseline on it. The reddness went away and as long as she keeps a thin layer of vaseline on his neck it stays away.

Hi. We had the same problem with our son around the same time. The drool will make it hard to clear up completely, but we used Cetaphil lotion a few times a day after the area was cleaned and dried. You could try that if you haven't already.

Hi there! My first boy, now 2, had the same problem when he started teething. It seemed like he was never going to quit drooling! He stared at 3 months and continued until he cut his very last tooth. I agree with the previous response about maybe trying cornstarch to keep the area dry. I used a lotion called Renew because one of the main ingredients has antibacterial/anti-inflammatory properties and that seemed to clear it up every time. Hope it works out for you!
