Rash Around Mouth from Drooling

Hi all,
My 6 month old son has a red rash around his mouth mostly above the lip. I believe it is from him drooling since its the exact area where his binky would be. it does not seem to hurt him and just looks red. taking away the binky is not an option really. He is teething again.. now he is getting the top eye teeth and it also helps him sleep. He currently has 4 teeth 2 top front and 2 bottom front and the top eye ones have poked through.

i know if it was on his neck or chin i would be able to put something on it like Balmex, but what can i do for mouth area?

I put good old vaseline all over my daughters face. Under her nose around her mouth and on her chin. I have been doing it since she started teething as necessary and she is now 22 mos old. You are not globbing it on so it's not like they will be eating it. Hope this helps!

Hi L.. I have an 11month old who has the same problem with the rash around the mouth. It is from the drooling and the pacifier. I use aquaphor on it a couple times a day and it takes it right away. It's kinda like neosporin but better. It even works for dry skin or chapped skin.

Hi there. I also had that Weleda's Calendula baby cream and it really did help with stuff like that. Calendula in general seems to heal things very quickly!

I would try using aquafor. I find it helps most irritations and it is pretty harmless. Good luck!

Hi L.,
My daughter used a pacificer too and around five-six mths. old she was teething and would have the same issue. I took her pacifier away and only gave it to her when she was going to sleep or really fussy. It gave her lip an opportunity to air out. After doing this, she never had that chapped upper lip. Hope this helps.

Our son is 2 and still gets this, from licking his upper lip. The doctor said to put hydrocortisone on it at night, and then a layer of vaseline (or aquaphor). Usually it's cleared by morning (but then we have a whole nother day of licking...). We have used Burt's Bees chapstick too, and California Baby Eczema Cream, but the vaseline barrier protects it while a cream will help heal it. Lanolin might work too, but some are more sensitive to that.

My daughter has the same problem. It's just chapped skin. The problem is, is that the cold air on the wet skin makes it worse. You can use chap lipstick. Stay away from anything that has alcohol (any word ending in -ol, except tocophenol, it's vitamin e) in it. The alcohol works against you making the skin more dry, hence you use more of the product (most chap sticks have alcohol in them). I use bag balm, it's like vaseline, but it was originally made for cows. Also, don't allow her to take the binky outside the house. And dry his skin before you leave the house.

I used chapstick and it worked great, before bed or naps.

Double check with your pediatrician first, but I used Aveeno lip protector for my kids at that age and it worked great. I only use Aveeno products on my kids, as my dermatologist told me it is the best for babies to adults. Aveeno has a roll on product that works fantastic. I know you can get it at any pharmacy but I get it at Wal-Mart for under $3. Hope your pediatrician lets you use it.
