My kids are 6 & 4.5 i was thinking about picking up a kit on this rainy Monday.
Is RL to young for them?
Where is the best place to buy it?

The 6yr old would probably be good with a little bit of instruction/help/input from you.
The 4.5 yr old ? I'd probably try to find something else for that one. From what I have seen with my daughter (she's 12) it isn't exactly difficult, but does require some fine motor skills and patience. Not usually things 4 yr olds have in abundance.
We just got one, at Michaels. My husband was all excited to buy it for our 6y/o, then got extremely frustrated trying to figure it out for her. I knew this would happen. Arts and crafts, and in general "figuring stuff out" are not my husbands strong points. I had other priorities this weekend and promised I'd take a look at it today... I am sure I will be able to figure it out. My daughter has the basic steps because her school friends showed her but she can't get start/end them on her own.
My point is a 6 y/o probably needs some guidance to get started, and a 4.5 year old might be too young. And some adults might even have difficulty ;)

Hobby Lobby has a kit with instructions! I have found it easier when another kid, that is an expert, teaches a little one instead of an adult...Call before you go anywhere..they are so popular, most folks are out of them within a couple of days of getting them in!

Yes, it's very hard and even the very simple patterns are hard to repeat.
If you sit with them to help if they need it then they should do okay. BUT if they're the type that gets frustrated and angry when they aren't 100% successful each time they are going to hate the loom.
My granddaughter is 10 and found the loom to be difficult if she wanted to do more than basic patterns without using video's on youtube. She found she enjoyed the small hook device and she makes bracelets and all sorts of things that way.
We bought an off brand on amazon for 2/3 the price of RL. My 7 yo DS LOVES it! And we are not arts and craftsy. He made a triple band the second day we had it. But be prepared to have to go online and watch teeny bopper teach you how to use it! :-)
My 4.5 yo DS wants to do it SO badly and can loop the rubber bands with supervision. But can't use the loom tool to do the second step. So we do that for him... He ges frustrated by that.
The 4 year old will love it. My kids were 6 and 3 when they got them.
Both of my kids need major help from me. Most other 6 year olds do not have an issue. My son is in Occupational Therapy, and rainbow loom is a great way to help with his fingers.
Micheal's is a good place to get these. I read online there are some copycats that are cheaper. Read the reviews before you buy on amazon.
Michaels. I have a 6 yo and a 7 yo girl. The 6 yo loves her rainbow loom and does some of the easier ones. The 7 yo cant be bothered. I think 4.5 is too young.

If they are the crafty, patient sort they will love it. It can be difficult if fine motor skills are not quite proficient yet, but good practice too!
Get an official Rainbow Loom from the website or at Michael's or the slightly cheaper (and less versatile) Magic Loom from Walmart. They are licensed by the same company and the materials are made in the USA.
All of the knockoffs and similar products of other names are made in China.
My daughter is 8 and got one for christmas. She had 2 cousins teach her some stuff and has learned stuff on youtube. My 6 year old became interested and the 8 yo has been teaching the 6 yo. So now my mom got one for my 6 yo (she was the original gifter). My 6 yo has been doing great. my 8 year old has learned from other kids and taught kids too. I haven't had to do a thing except buy more bands. HAHA. So your 6yo might be able to learn it BUT you might have a lot of work to do it yourself.
We went to a holiday party in Dec and a 3 yr old was trying to show my 5 yr old how to do it. She had already made 3 bracelets.
Michaels has great prices on all the bands and the loom itself. It is a bit more durable then the cheaper ones.
6yo, sure. I used to LOVE mine when I was young!
For the 4yo... Maybe something to paint. Lol.
