Radon Mitigation System in High Radon Area Homes - Does It Work?

Hello,
I'm looking to move and some of the areas I am interested in are in a high radon area and I have a few question for those who live in those areas...

I see that a radon mitigation system can be installed to have the radon redirected out of the home.. Does anyone have any experience with this, does having this installed in your home really work? Have you or anyone you know lived in your home for years and did you/they ever have health issues/lung cancer even with the system in their home?

Would you have this installed even if your home tested under the limit amount set by EPA?

Do people get lung cancer in these areas frequently? How does this work with work places and schools?
Thank you!

What can I do next?

My home tested high for radon at the home inspection. The seller installed a mitigation system. Afterwards, the radon levels were undetectable. We've lived here for 15 years now. We have it tested periodically to make sure it's still working. Levels have been below the detection limit every time. So, I can say with confidence that a mitigation system works. And none of us have lung issues.

I don't know the answers to your other questions (schools, etc).

When my daughter bought her house the well water tested for radon. A remediation system was installed and it works perfectly. They have to have the filter changed every year but that's a minor thing. A house she looked at had a radon remediation system for the air. She was under contract for the house and the radon testing in the basement was fine. She didn't go through with the purchase due to the septic failing.

The radon settles in basements for the most part so you don't really have an issue in schools or businesses.

Hi. Based on my experience, you have every reason to be cautious. We lost two cats to lung cancer before we finally tested for radon (hadn't been required at closing, years before). Ours tested at 26, while the acceptable level is 4. We had a system installed immmediately, and it worked perfectly. After moving into a brand new home, the basement tests came back positive as well. So we had the mitigation system hooked up and it works perfectly. I highly recommend it. If our levels were below the suggested danger level, we would not have installed the system. Just have the air tested once a year. Good luck! Small animals are very susceptible to the toxicity, sadly. All the best.
