Questions About Ultrasound Results.

I recently had a ultrasound performed and at the time I was 18 weeks and 1 day. My doctor reviewed them and said eveything appears to be normal. She requested that I have another one in 4 weeks because the amniotic fluid was slightly elevated. Should I be alarmed? I tried to calm myself by saying that all the water I drank before the exam could be the culprit being as though the baby's urine makes up some of the amniotic fluid. Please Help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to thank everyone for their wisdom and to let you all know I received my results today and my amniotic fluid is normal. We don't know what happened. I guess somethings are unexplainable.

I am an ultrasound tech, you should find out the exact level the fluid was measured at. Low is 9cm's and high is over 20cm's. If it is just slightly high I would not worry about it at this time and just wait to hear the results of your next scan. They may have just eyeballed the amount anyway and may not have an accurate measurement. It does sound like they are just going to keep tabs on it. I would try and get it out of your mind and not stress about it for now. Good Luck and congrats!

Unless the doctor says there is something to worry about, put it out of your mind. Don't even put the idea out in the universe! There is nothing wrong with being cautious and you'll be able to find out the sex of the baby if you want to at the next visit. Things are going to be different with this pregnancy. It will be better/worse, more sick/no sickness. But that's the fun part. Enjoy this time rather than worry b/c your life is about to change all over again. good luck to you!

Hello,

The condition of too much amniotic fluid is called polyhydramnios. I think it is usually diagnosed much late in pregnancy though. As a PP said, it can be associated with problems, but is really not common.

Consider the most people with healhty pregnancies in the US have only one ultrasound and in other countries, none. Slight abnormalities are probably never even noticed so who knows what is "normal?" Ultrasound is an inexact science and false alarms are very common. I'm sure everything will be fine. Good luck!

L.,
Congrats on your pregnancy!! Your amniotic fluid replaces itself every 3 hours. If you KNOW that you drank a lot before the ultra sound, then that's probably the culprit!

I agree with the previous advice, if your dr is not concerned, you shouldn't be either.

Good luck and what great news that you get to see that sweet little baby again in 4 weeks!
