Questions About Mirena - Lansing,MI

Hey all,

I'm scheduled to have the Mirena IUD put in on Wed. My neighbor has it and loves it but of course in the past couple of days I've heard some crazy stories. Anyone out there have any to share good or bad. I just had my second a daughter at the end of June. My husband and I don't think we want anymore but we decided to keep the attitude of "never say never." Just curious what other people have to say! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

ended up getting the IUD today. Talked all things over with my Dr. read up on more info and decided it was good for me. If I end up hating it they said no prblem, they'll just take it out and search for another option so, well see. Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it!!

You may want to look at the wikipedia information on Mirena. If you are nursing you child they have shown long term studies that these children who receive the hormones in the mothers milk have respiratory and eye difficulties.
Certain organizations do consider this to be abortive, yes the lining of you uterus has thinned ect. the fertilized embryo does not have anywhere to implant if their is a fertilization, which there is a 20% chance of that happening with mirena according to studies. There is also a doubled risk of breast cancer. Look for long term effects and cancer with mirena. This does mostly as it says it does, although what about 10, 15, or 20 years from now?what are you possible hazards.Children want healthy mothers to a ripe old age. Is it worth it?

I am on my second one, having the first one for 5 years and it needed to be changed. Love it, love it, love it! I had it becasue my periods kept me from life, and now i have none(periods that it). With 3 active children, I couldn't afford to be in bed 2 weeks every month and this was the solution. It took about 6 months for that effect to occur, but it was worth it.Keep in mind that the uterine lining thins out, which means you shed your lining, which means bleeding, but not a period or cramping, just bleeding like a period at first and then it tapers off. For me, that was 6 months until it totally stopped but for others it is much less. Now, I got mine when I was 44-45 and done having children, so if you change your mind it will take awhile for your uterine lining to return to normal (3-6 mths I think, ask your doctor). The only side effects I had was tender breasts at first, and the cost. Insurance didn't cover it,even though it saved me from having a hysterectomy (ablation wasn't as common as it is now). It hurts a little going in which takes a second. I had some cramping which lasted a day or two with the first one, with the second one I had none. I highly recommend it if you can afford it. My life is so much easier because of it.

Hi S.,

I used Mirena previously and had an awful experience with/from it! After having my body my whole chemical make-up changed and I had a terrible reaction to the IUD. My face broke out horribly with acne like you had never seen! I went through chemical peels, microderm, injections-you name it I did it bea=cause I was determined to keep the IUD in! After months of counter-productive results, I had it removed! I continued with treatments and finally have somewhat healthy looking skin again. My doc said it was due to the horomones.

I have a girlfriend who also has it in now, and she absolutely loves it! Good luck to you with your decision and I hope it works for you!

You are either going to love it or hate it. Some people with have no periods some will bleed for months. Though the brochures claim no weight gain, I know woman who've gained weight and have severe mood swings. You can also still get pregnant. The iud doesn't always prevent ovulation just creates an uninhabitable enviroment to try to prevent implantation. Sometimes implantation can occur and more often than not will end with a miscarriage. However, there are woman out there who it works perfect for and love it. Just be prepared to possibly have it taken out in 6 months time if you hate it. Also make sure your insurance covers insertion and removal. Some don't and you can be stuck with a huge bill.

My good friend started having horrible panic attacks, it was disrupting her life so bad, she was ready to get on meds or hospitalized. Thank God I had read something about the possibility of the MIrena having this effect on some people. She was reluctant to take it out because it had cost her $500 to put in. But she couldn't live like that, so she took the chance and took it out and hasn't had one since. If you are prone to any thing like depression or anxiety, I'd say, don't get it. If you have never been effected with anything like that, proceed with caution - be aware. Doctors won't tell you this either because they either don't know or they don't believe it. Anything that releases hormones has that potential. I'm going to put in the copper iud - no hormones.
One more thing. Many women never make the connection between what they are feeling and the Mirena. My friend never would have unless I brought it up. These women just think they are having problems so they might not bring it up with their doctors or with anyone.

I would not recommend it because my sister in law's moved around and was stuck and she had to have surgery to get it out. Not my idea of safe birth control. I personally would not want some foreign object in me that was not supposed to be. I am back on the pill and it works the best for me but everybody is different.

Hi S. -

I went with the Mirena IUD this May after my daughter was born in February. I have had no problems so far. There was some minor cramping during and after the procedure but nothing compared to childbirth! The first few times my husband and I had sex afterwards he said he could feel the 'strings' but that didn't last long and it wasn't painful to him. Hope this helps....
