Questions About ABA Therapy??
We are having behavoiral issues with our son. I started to explore some behavorial therapist in our area to possibly help out. As I was looking around I see that some of the places that offer therapy have ABA therapist. I am not even sure if this is what we need or if it is appropriate for my son. just wondering if anyone has used this type of therapy and would be willing to share their experiences with me. Thanks!

I don't know much, but it is based on Classical Conditioning (Pavlov's dog). It is for kids with autism. Depending on your issues, you might want to look at OT in addition to/instead of behavioral therapy.

Wondering if you have done any therapy at all? Most counselors do cognitive/behavioral therapy. It focuses on thinking patterns & behavior changes. Sounds like what you are looking for with your son. If you are just starting out, I would suggest starting with a counselor and looking for someone that can see him once a week or every other. If you have insurance, you can call the insurance for providers. I have had experience working with Perakis, Resis and Assoc in Schaumburg. They are really good with a variety of counselors and psychiatrists (if meds are sought). If you don't have insurance or have medicaid, there are counselors specific to that program.
Hope that helps a little....

ABA is primarily recommended and helpful for children on the autism spectrum. It is extremely intense, specific and expensive. I agree with Kim S, Dr. Tim Wahlberg is fantastic. You could also look in to Community Therapy Services. I believe that they do free general screenings (I know that they used to). That may give you a start in the right direction.

ABA therapy is primarily used for kids with autism. Behavioral issues wouldn't qualify him for this type of therapy. I would suggest you take your son to a pediatric psychologist to be evaluated and then the doctor can recommend treatments.
Dr Tim Wahlberg at the Prarie Clinic in Geneva is wonderful
