It is completely normal, my daughter sometimes only goes once a day. When I called her ped when she hadn't gone one day he said to give her 1 oz prune juice mixed with 1 oz of water. Prune juice worked wonders and it was quick too!!! If his poop is really hard you might want to give him a little bit of juice, maybe not even that much, just so he doesn't get a hernia from pushing.

Pooping only 2 times a day, that seems like a lot of pooping, some babies only poop a few times a week.If he seems to have trouble with his tummy it could be taking time to adjust to formula. It took my grand daughter a while to adjust to formula, she still has some trouble and may need an upper GI.

Going 2x per day is actually pretty good. Our Pediatrician says not to be worried until an infant has gone 3 days with no poop. Not to worry - both my kids were raised on formula and are completely healthy and bright. Breastfeeding doesn't work out for all of us.

formula will do that! Talk to pediatrician and make sure that's the right formaul to be on, and if the Dr. is OK with only pooping 2 times a day, then that's fine.
DO NOT give water or juice to a 1 month old!!! The American Academy of Pediatrics staes that everywhere, their bodies can only safely digest correctly mixed formula or breastmilk!!!

The formula does constipate them. The same thing happened to my son when I switched him at 2 months old. If he didn't go at all or once once that day we would give him 1 ounce of prune juice mixed with 1 ounce of water.

totally and absolutely normal
breastfed babies can go as long a week between pooping, formula fed babies can go as long as 3 days between poops and still be perfectly ok and normal.

J.,

I nursed both of my boys (the first for about 3 weeks and the second for 5 months) and then switched them to formula. When I did that, their number of poops changed right away. Breastmilk is very easy for a baby to digest so they poop with just about every feeding. The formula is harder to digest then breast milk so it is very normal for a baby on formula to poop twice a day. Both of my boys would poop once, maybe twice a day when on formula.

Hope this helps. And congratulations on being a grandma!

one thing is for sure... all babies are different. both of my sons were breastfed and the first pooped about five or six times a day. the second went a record 13 days without a poop! he usually pooped about once a week. all is well unless the baby seems very uncomfortable and poop is still soft. (answer... there is no "normal"!!)

My little boy used to have only 1 bowel movement per day. Sometimes he would go a couple days with out one. His Dr. said not to worry as long as it was not more than 3 days. I wouldn't go the prune juice route until he's on his 4th day w/out a dirty diaper.

I bet you didn't think you would get this many responses about poop! I didn't read all of them, but I was told that as long as he is not straining and the poop itself is not too hard he is fine. My daughter went through a phase where she would go once every 10 days...and she was BF. All is well!

Hi. As far as I know, breastfed babies poop quite a bit more than formula-fed babies. This happened to my son after I stopped breastfeeding him after six weeks. Actually, at one point, my son was only pooping once every four days and my doctor claimed that could be normal, because every baby is different. I do think, however, that he was constipated. But the fact that your grandson is pooping twice a day seems like a normal amount to me.

Every baby is different, so definitely talk to the pediatrician. My son was BF but I don't think I had enough fruit in my diet to make him go. When I did give him formula not too much changed . Therefore, for a few months I had to put 1-2 teaspoons of karo syrup. Now he goes 1-2 x's a day. Now he's 10 months old. We haven't used karo in a long time, but he is also on a different formula. It's Enfamil gentle ease. He may be just fine. If you're really concerened talk to the doc.

2x a day is fine, but if you are concerned, you may want to try using Good Start formula. I have a book called "Baby 411" that says the proteins in Good Start may be easier to digest and that babies may be less constipated and have less gas. It helped with my son when he was a newborn.

J.,
My son is now a year old and usually goes once or twice a day. But there was a time when he was younger (I think it was like around 3 to 6 months) where he didn't go for like 13 days. You know what, he's absolutely normal. Just like the books say...each baby is different. I also nursed my son. If he is at a good weight, seems healthy, then every thing should be fine.

What is the poop like? Is it still pasty? If so, then he's fine. If it is rock hard and like little dry pellets, then the mother should check with the pediatrician.

His digestive system is handling the transition from breastmilk to formula, so it is not uncommon to have some bowel changes. Fortunately, as long as the poop isn't rock hard, log-like, or pellet-like, he'll manage JUST fine on the formula! No need to panic :)

Pretty darn good. My kids, all three, were breast fed for more than a year each and they typically only went poop once everyday and sometimes skipped a day or two.

pretty normal. Some babies go as little as once every 3 days. My daughter is an eat and then poop 30 mins later child but I know lots of children who poop only once or twice a day and sometimes less than that.

This is completely within the bounds of normal. If the stool is hard and black I would check with your grand-babies pediatrician. Make sure that your daughter/daughter in law is mixing the formula correctly, as even little mistakes with the measurements can sometimes make processing and expelling formula more difficult.
