Thank you to everyone for your responses to my last question regarding help for nausea/vomiting. Many of you were very helpful with your answers, especially those who said zofran didn't work for them the second time around. This is the problem my sister is having. She tried the ginger tea and it does help, but she would like to know if anyone knows WHY zofran doesn't work for every pregnancy. Thanks again!!

I will very cautiously throw this out there... as I don't know exactly what your sister is experiencing. (I responded to your first post also.) But for me, it wasn't like the Zofran made me stop being nauseous. It didn't. It eased it enough that I was able to be functional,, which was HUGE for our family. (I had already "shipped" our 2 yr old off to stay with grandparents for a week, and my husband couldn't burn any more sick leave.) I still vomited stomach acid first thing EVERY morning throughout the entire pregnancy (or dry-heaved if there wasn't enough acid to come up). I still felt like the smallest thing could send me running for the nearest "facilities". I still was very sensitive to caffeine in foods or beverages and had a continual "taste" in my mouth if I wasn't eating constantly. BUT, I was able to manage taking care of my 2 yr old, and getting the grocery shopping done, and getting a shower. All things I was NOT capable of without the Zofran. So, I am curious (not judgmental at ALL), what your sister's expectation is/was for the Zofran. The thought of food BEFORE I took Zofran was misery, after I started on it, I was able to eat a meal and enjoy it (sort of)... I was ECSTATIC, but I was still nauseous.... Has the Zofran provided ANY relief for her?
Oh, one other thing that "helped" a little, was sucking on lemon drops. The old kind your grandma kept around the house...the big ones shaped like little lemons or whatever. They were a little bit of a challenge for me to find recently, but they are still out there. I used to go to bed (dentists everywhere will cringe) with one in my mouth... it was the only way I could get to sleep. (not as a child - during pregnancy). I also had the excessive salivation (seemed to go hand in hand with the nausea, only it got worse nearer the end of the pregnancy) and the lemon drops helped with that at bedtime. I went to sleep with a towel over my pillow...

To make you feel better, both of my pregnancies I had to take zofran and reglan just to be able to function. I still vomited 6 times a day for the entire 38 weeks of pregnancy, but I was able to gain weight and have perfect babies. They are now almost 6 and 4 years old and you wouldn't know they caused any problems in utero. I was able to gain 24 pounds both times while on both medications with no complications. Maybe I was just lucky both times, but at least the medicines made me feel a little better. Without the medicines I was vomiting 14 times or more a day. What a relief!!

You'll get results if you google "zofran" As it is a prescrition drug, there may be toxic results to the fetus...

Each time you are pregnant your body changes wildly. The hormones are different each time, your body chemistry is different. Here are a couple of things that worked for me-small lemonheads candy-the sour really helped with my nausea. And the pickled ginger that you get with sushi. Just a tiny, tiny bite of it at a time. Both really made a difference. I kept the lemonheads in my purse at all times.
