Question About Whole Milk

My daughter is 8 months old and has been eating pureed foods for the past 2 months. I make cornmeal porridge and mashed potatoes for my son, and would like to begin feeding her the same foods (to save money and preparation time). My concern: would it be bad to give my daughter these foods since I prepare them with whole milk and she is not yet 1?
(In case you're wondering...my children enjoy the benefits of a complete diet. I mentioned the above foods because of my current concern.) Thanks in advance for your replies! :)

What I did with my daughter is what to cook with milk when I need it. Babies can have it in food at 6 months, sauces, cereal and such like but not to drink until they are 12 months old. They still need all the nutrients that breast milk or formula gives them

I would say to make it with formula-your son probably wouldn't notice? or, if you're breastfeeding (or you don't want to use formula) then try using rice milk- it's not as fatty as whole milk so you could mix in some olive oil for some 'good' fat :)

Personally, I waited. Every time the pediatrician said "wait until 6 months for this, wait until 1 year for this..." I waited. It's a personal choice really. I just felt better going with what the doctor said because he had much more experience than I did LOL! I'd speak to your pediatrician about it and see where he/she stands.

hello

I gave both my kids whole milk before they where one i started at age 9months and they both loved it and still love drinking milk and water more then juice. I say just try giving her a little to see how she does with it and if she does good then you can start giving her your food i did with both my kids I started giving them our food at 6months. It is so much better then the jar food and cheaper too My son is five and is very picky but my daugther who is 2 eats everything given to her. which i love. good luck

Please do your own research about milk online and via your local library. There are soo many side affects from cow's milk, hormones, antibiotics, mucous builder, common allergen, etc.. My older kids 10 and 12 do drink it, but I try to limit it. My daughter who is 7 only drinks ALmond milk. You can get it at the health food store. It is very nutritious and delicious, and no side affects. Also if you get the sweetened vanilla you can water it down as it is quite thick, and it tastes just as good.

I would check with your pediatrician. Mine always told me that their digestive systems can't handle regular milk before the age of 1. You could always do as someone else said and mix them both with formula.

I'm sorry I dont have a response to your whole milk concern/question. But I have a question of my own. I see that your son was born at 1 lb 3 oz, I was wondering if he is under weight or is gaining steadily? See my 21 month old daughter was born at 15 oz and is only about 19 lbs. I feed her a balanced meal. Oatmeal or grits/porridge for breakfast, maybe with a sausage patty, for lunch she has her serving of meat, whether it be chicken, ground beef, turkey, etc, a veggie and some sort of starch (pasta, potatoes, etc) and for dinner its kind of along the same lines as lunch with snacks in between. She is a picky eater and sometimes I have to fight with her to eat something. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong or should be ding something different. I know that she is a preemie, but I look at other children her age and wonder what I am doing wrong, for her not to be gaining weight.

I also wanted to know how long it took your son to learn to walk (if he is walking yet). My daughter goes to physical therapy once a week (all that my insurance will allow). Also is he speaking yet, I mean full words or sentences. Because my daughter still babbles. I know I am going on and on, but I just have some concerns and wanted to get some insight from another mom with a preemie.

Thanks for your time,

A.

You would have to ask your doctor. I wouldn't but my little sister was hospitalized every time she even had milk choloate so I might be on the weary side.

From what I undersatnd babies can't digest milk proteins and it can cause gas and even bleeding in the digestive system. I wouldn't do it.

Because of the slight chance she may become allergic to milk. I would wait until she turns one to be safe. My son is allergic to milk and a lot of things so now I recommend waiting the full year! Good Luck.

i would say try it out and see if it bothers his stomach. it all depends on the child and with the little bit that he would get from it i dot think it would make a difference try use the reduced fat 2% my doc and others was happy when i was giving my child this because it's not so fatty they told me it reduces the risk of a obese child. good luck and do what you think is right a mother know best!!!!

Hmm, I would say that depends on how much milk you are actually using in those items.
One of the reasons it is recommended to wait until the age of 1 to introduce cow's milk is because the protein in milk is one of the hardest proteins to digest (Much harder than yogurt or Cheese). And babies under the age of one don't have the ability to actually break down those proteins properly. This can cause gas, and other digestive problems. (The protein that is used in formula based on cow's milk is actually broken down in processing so babies can digest it better.)
So I would base it on how much you are actually putting in the items. I for one, do not use too much milk in mashed potatoes, so wouldn't see an issue with that--but I know I use a lot more in oatmeal and would hold off on that or use more water.
If you want to give it to her, introduce it like you would any other new food, in a small amount and not with any other new food--so you can see if she has any reactions to it. If she seems fine with that small amount then I wouldn't worry about it.
Your other option would be to make those thing with formula of BM since that won't affect your son.

K.,
My hat goes off to you, you certainly have your hands full. You sound as though you are doing great!!!! Especially feeding your children such a good diet. Its hard enough just to raise them let alone make REAL food for them. Keep it up!
As for the milk situation, I would hesitate on giving it to your little one. Milk isnt really great for kids anyway (thats my opinion along with lots of natural studies) But it can be hard for them to digest at this young age. You may try to take a small portion of the foods and maybe mix it with her formula instead? Just a thought. There is also some great books out there for feeding wholesome foods. (I cant remember any right now)
Good Luck!

I have 4 kids and I started giving my kids whole milk before the age of one. Why don't you try using the baby formula I did that many times or even soy milk. Give it a try.
