Question About Very Active Baby Movements in Womb

This is probably a silly question, but I'm 7 months pregnant with Baby #2 (a boy this time). I thought my first baby (girl) was pretty active, but she seems really tame now compared to this one! Maybe it's just a boy thing though, and I realize all babies are different. Anyway, he's been active since 14 weeks, *really* active from 16 weeks on. Practically all day & night (which I love!) but recently I've been wondering something about the actual movement. Maybe 20% of the time his kicking feels 'normal' (not that I am at all an expert on what is normal), not sure how to describe it exactly. Anyway, the other 80% his moving is super fast, rhythmic, like he's having spasms or something. Is this completely normal, or can the speed/frequency of a babie's movement indicate problems? Like I said, probably a silly question, but I feel like I'm starting to get a little anxious about it.

Update: I don't *think* it's hiccups, but I wouldn't really know. It happens a lot, most of his kicking/movements are like this. So maybe 5-10 times a day, but some days more than that?? I'll start paying better attention now/counting, so I can mention it to my Dr. next week. Could it be anything besides hiccups, is it normal for them to move like that?

What can I do next?

He might just be doing summersaults in there. Generally, whenever I felt less kicking, more "other stuff", she was flipping over (we watched her on the ultrasound).

I wouldn't worry about it.

I had the same thing with my boy. He did have hiccups a lot, but I could tell the difference, so I'm guessing you can too - they're pretty subtle feeling. He also did the "spastic" movement thing and it worried me. I told my doctor and they did an ultrasound to ensure me that everything was ok. They just said some babies move a lot and are more jerky with their movements. I noticed it more when I was lying on my side - if he didn't have enough room, man he would freak out! Like he was in there having little tantrums already! Everything turned out fine - he slowed down as I got further along because he didn't have as much room. I would suggest talking to your doctor about it to ease your mind!

Being anxious is normal at this stage of yours. Your baby's movements sounds normal to me. But still, if you have any doubts, best is to ask your OB about it. My daughter is very active, she was a active baby in my womb itself, my OB had told me this when i was just 14 weeks pregnant, and now, my daughter is 20 months and is really giving me tough time by making me run behind her. When she was in my womb, most of the time i felt that she is playing football or doing gymnastic inside me.

My son (my first, my 2nd is a girl) was just like you describe in the womb. He was SO active day and night. And yes, there were times it was rhythmic and it scared me bc I worried that something was wrong with him. I was pretty anxious but just waited and when he was born he was totally normal and healthy! hooray! He is an extremely active child and can be quite challenging. Anyway, I am sure you have a healthy little boy in there...enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

I had the same with mi third girl, and to be honest I even think " that she .was on pain or getting strangled or something " everytime I told my doc. He will smile at me.. been said....I think is perfectly normal I deliver a beautiful healthy and calm baby...but wait until your 36 weeks, those kicks hit my rib cage and I was on pain most of my days....good luck and talk to your doc. About any concerns...

I've had 3 kids. All of my kids did the same thing (fast and rithmic). Kind of like the baby was having a seizure. Yep its hiccups. Very normal and a good sign that your little one is trying to learn to breath! Good luck!

My first baby was very active! It never slowed down and he kept me up day and night. I even ended up with a pulled ligament. The bigger I got the worse it got. People would stare in public because my stomach was always on the go! Limbs punching out and total stomach flops! As I got close to my due date, I had a recurrent dream that he punched his way out of me! He did have colic as an infant. Otherwise, he was a very active baby and toddler who never liked to nap. He also turned out to be a genious. Today he is 30, married and very successful. As with all things - this to shall pass!

My son was same way. I used to think it felt like he was having seizures in there. But he was born very healthy and still doing great at 3 months!

When I was pregnant with my daughter she had hiccups 10 or more times a day. It was very rhythimic and would last anywhere from a few minutes to 15 minutes or so. Sounds very normal to me, but certianly mention it to your dr at the next appt.

Mention your thoughts to your doctor, if its super fast then it might not be hiccups. Its probabably nothing, but call your doctor today because you shouldn't be nervous and they can put your concerns to rest.

mine did that in the womb too but he did it more when it was going to rain. I spent alot of time in the hospital cause it felt like contractions and wouldn't stop if I walked etc. after the rain he would get calm. The nurses in the stress test even noticed some days he was extremely active and other days he wasn't I was the one that picked up on the storms. He was born happy and healthy and lots of muscles :) relax he will be fine.

It's probably hiccups. Nothing to worry about but mention it to your doctor next time you see him/her.

How often does it happen? My baby gets hiccups probably 3-4 times a day. I can also feel and see her practice breathing.

FYI--my first was so active in utero that the ultrasound technician had trouble locating everything they needed to locate. He also bruised me internally from punching me so hard! I used to sometimes double over. Anyhow, he turned into a very active infant, toddler and child (now 14). You might want to be ready to have an active one on your hands!
