OKay I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2004 after years of female problems. I was given the metformin prescription back then but until recently I never took it regularly. But it was my new years resolution to start taking it. And it's been almost 3 weeks I've been taking it. My stomach is almost use to it, but I haven't had my period this months by about 3 weeks. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests, all negative. So heres my question. Is the medicine regulating me? Is this normal? How long before I see any weight loss from it? Should I go back to my doc to see if my thyroid might be acting up again? Like I said I have never taken it regularly, so I am clueless when it comes to why I am late. I was at least somewhat normal with my cycles before I started taking the metformin. So any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

This is what I found at WebMd I couldn't copy and paste all of it but I just went to webmd and just typed in metformin.

How It Works
Metformin decreases the level of androgens produced by the ovaries and adrenal glands. It also helps the body use insulin and may reduce the risk of diabetes.

Metformin lowers blood sugar levels by:

Decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver.
Increasing the amount of sugar absorbed by muscle cells and decreasing the body's resistance to insulin (insulin resistance).
When blood sugar is lower, less insulin is needed, so the body makes less insulin. And when insulin is lower, the body produces a lower level of androgens.

Why It Is Used
Metformin is a diabetes medicine sometimes used for lowering insulin and blood sugar levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This helps regulate menstrual cycles, start ovulation, and lower the risk of miscarriage in women with PCOS. Long-term use also lowers diabetes and heart disease risk related to high insulin levels.1

If you're not getting the thereputic results your doc indicated after a few months of taking the metformin regularly I would schedule an appointment.

I just answered your question and then my computer died so I hope I can remember what I wrote.HAHA.

I too have PCOS and was taking metformin. The reason your cycles may be off is that your body is getting used to the medication. Our bodies take our carbs and turn them into insulin and store our carbs as fat so the metformin helps it store as energy. (If I am remembering correctly) I had 2 previous miscarriages and believe that the metformin helped me have my daughter. Just continue taking the meds and if you don't get your period the doc can give you meds to bring it back. Good luck!!

My sister has PCOS and is on this drug. I'll leave it to those that have it to describe what it does for you body. What I'll tell is what she says. It doesn't matter how good she is about taking her meds. If she doesn't stick to her no/low carb diet and exercise the weight comes right back. Personally I've only seen her drop a few pounds at a time before it does this. Make sure you talk to your doctor about your physical issues but also make sure you talk to them about what else you need to do to help this medicine work better if your concerned about the weight. There is no magic weight loss drug, but they certainly can help you in other good ways. Glad to hear your trying it.

Good luck!

It's probably just your body adjusting to the medication. Make an appoint with your doctor if you get any other side effects.
