Question About HELLP Syndrome

I had HELLP syndrome with my son. Thankfully, it didn't get bad until 3 days after my due date so they did a C-section and all is well. I was wondering what the odds are that I would have HELLP syndrome with a second pregnancy.

What can I do next?

I had HELLP with my first child. Mine was very bad and I was advised not to get pregnant again. Well, after a couple years I talked to my doc and we decided to go for a second baby. I was watched very carefully through the pregnancy. I had extra monitoring visits in the hospital and was seen more frequently- basically was considered high risk from the start. My second pregnancy went well until 37 weeks. I started showing signs of developing preeclampsia, so they did a c/s right away. Obviously only your doc can tell you the actual "risk", but my HELLP was the most severe and I went on to have a second very healthy baby. Hope this helps.

I had HELLP with my second son. He was stillborn at 36 weeks. I went on to have two more healthy babies. During those pregnancies I took a baby aspirin. I also saw a high risk doctor called a perinatologist. I was monitored very carefully with level two sonograms. I also had blood drawn more often than "normal" pregnant women. I had no problems with either pregnancy. Good luck to you. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

J.-

One of my very good friends went through this with her first pregnancy. She had HELLP and pre-aclamp.Her 1st born was a premie. This pregnancy she did not get the HELLP but they are still watching her (she has the baby a week ago) born at 38 weeks.

I developed Pre-eclampsia at 32 weeks. Thankfully, mine never went into HELLP. One of my nurses upon discharge could tell I was very worried about "what does this mean for any future pregnancies?" She said that most likely it would either happen later in my pregnancy or not at all and not as severe. My OB just says they will consider you high risk and monitor you very closely throughout the pregnancy. Hope this is comforting. I know how scary all of that can be. So many emotions surrounding it that honestly I still haven't even worked through, yet.
