Question About Fever in 8 Year Old.

My 8 year old son woke up with a fever this morning. Although it has been climbing during the day I haven't been too worried. I gave him some ibuprophen about 2 hours ago and settled him in for a nap. When he woke up his temperature was 102.5, one degree higher than it was two hours ago before I gave him the meds. I thought I had heard somewhere that this means something, but I couldn't find it anywhere online. Does anyone know if it means something if the temps don't go down with meds?

TIA

What can I do next?

The rise in temp could also be attributed to sleeping conditions. If he slept under several blankets, the blankets would have acted as an insulator keeping the heat in his body rather than letting it dissipate into the air around him. If you are still worried, give his pedi a call or a nurses line if you have access to one.

You can give your son childrens tylenol alternately with the ibuprofen. With a persistent fever like that I would. I would give the advil, wait 2-3 hours and then give the tylenol, wait 2 hours and then give the advil again, etc... Be sure your son gets plenty of fluids.

Now, consider the symptoms to decide whether you need to see a doctor before Monday. Do his ears hurt? Does he have a stiff neck? Does he have a sore throat, headache or stomache? If you suspect an ear infection, or strept throat I would call your pediatrician on call for sure. My friends son never got a sore throat with strept throat. Just a stomach ache and a headache.

I need more info. does he have any other symptoms? My oldest doesn't act sick when he is sick and this summer out of no where he spiked a fever and was extremely fatigued we went to the dr on a friday they could not pin point what was wrong and just decided he was fighting off a virus saturday we ended up at the er and he was treated for what was thought to be cellulitis but turned out to be lyme disease. If your son has a fever and is definately not acting like himself you could always call your pediatrician's office most have an answering service and will get back to you. If you feel like something is just not right trust your gut.
As a rule of thumb I don't treat a fever under 103 unless my child is in obvious discomfort.

Believe it or not, but a fever is a good sign--it means his body is fighting off an infection. I was always told NOT to bring a fever down too soon or if it was lower than 103, unless the child is in obvious discomfort. Keep him hydrated, gives him lots of chicken soup (it really does work!) and watch him, but don't panic just yet unless it spikes even higher &/or he has some signs of serious issues. My guess is that it's most likely an inner ear infection. They're very common. If he's not better by Monday morning, then get him in to the Dr., but I wouldn't worry too much just yet about rushing him off to the ER. Hope he feels better soon!

My 3 year old daughter is fighting off some kind of virus and we had her on ibuprofen and tylenol and she still had over 102. She has had a really high fever with this virus.

It means he probably has an infection. Maybe an ear infection or strep throat could be going around. My son is almost 8 and did have an ear infection a couple months back, although he never said his ear hurt. He just said he didn't feel well, had a fever and would occasionally complain of a headache. I would bring him in to the Drs in the am and get it checked out. If it goes much higher you may want to find a walk in clinic and take him right in. Hope he feels better.

rotate between tylenol and ibuprofen, every 3 hrs. the fever that won't come down with meds, for us at least, always meant strep throat, which caused no throat pain, no headache, normal eating habits, but just constant fever that wouldn't go down. you can take him to minute clinic (cvs) if you want to avoid ER, the minute clinic will do a strep test, the 5 min one and also send it for a 48 hr growth to see if he's developing strep.
good luck
ps keep fluids going too
