Question About Cleaning Bottles of Breastmilk

Hello! I was wondering if other mamas had recommendations on the best way to clean bottles of breast milk. My daughter gets 2 bottles of breast milk each day since I returned to work. Right now I soak them in warm soapy water. Is that good enough?

What can I do next?

L.,
That sounds right. I also sterilize the bottles. You can buy a Avent microwave sterilzer. It's easy and works great.

I used BPA-free bottles (Medela and Nuby) and ran them through the dishwasher. If you don't have a dishwasher, warm, soapy water should be fine.

I found the best stain remover is an SA8 product (Amway) that I get at we-us.mychoices.biz

Lots of moms have used this and it even gets out formula and baby poop stains. I first dicovered it when I was a waitress and needed to get food stains out of my apron.

There is a liquid and spray, the liquid is for food stains.

That's all I ever did - warm soapy water. The baby never got sick so I guess that was fine! I don't think it's necessary to boil them. I never boiled anything, but then again, I'm not a germaphobic.

Hi L.,
First, I want to commend you on still breastfeeding/pumping after going back to work. It is a tough road, but such a wonderful gift to give your baby. Her health will thank you for many years to come. So keep it up as long and as strong as you can!
Second, now, to answer your question, when I was a new mom, I too, did not know the best way to clean a lot of things including her bottles. Before all of the research came out on the toxic effects of BPA in the bottles, I wanted to sterilize/disinfect everything and always boiled or used the Medela steam bags to complete the job. That was 5 years ago, before we knew that extreme heat like boiling/steaming sped up the process in leaching out the BPA from the bottles and into the breastmilk/formula, and hence into our babies bodies. Supposedly most/all of the bottles on the store shelves these days are BPA free, but what will they find out that is slowly hurting our kids next?
A chlorine and phosphate free dish soap and warm water will do the job beatifully, just leave them to air dry completely.
Hope that you are having a blast with the new little love of your life!
