I am a vet assistant... Puppies can start their heat cycle as early as 4 months of age and can have a heat cycle every 4-8 months. It's never too early or late to spay her and you can possibly even do it while she's in heat (depending on the vet). Her heat cycle lasts about 1 month and you may see bleeding for 2 weeks. Good luck!

About 20 days of bleeding is average and it will happen about twice a year. Be very careful to keep her indoors and outside only on a leash and supervised. Male dogs can/will jump fences or dig under and have been known to travel miles to the scent of a female in heat. When the bleeding stops that does not mean that her heat cycle is over. It will last about another week or two and during this time (after the bleeding stops- she will still be swollen) is when she is ovulating so don't make the mistake of thinking it is over! Keep her away from other dogs until she is out of heat and spayed!

A dogs heat cycle can last at least 3 weeks. You will need to watch her like a hawk as she can get bred within the last 2 weeks. No letting her out without some one with her as males can smell the scent from as far away as a mile. Depending on her breed the larger the dog the later the heat cycle can start but that does not mean that a small breed can not start early. After reading some of the answers from the other moms I wanted to edit my answer DO NOT GET her spayed while she is in heat. There is alot of blood in the female organs and can cause serious problems. Most vets will recommend that you wait until she comes out of heat and than do it. The heat cycle does not last a month and some bitches will do a 7-5 split or and 8-4 split so wait until she is out heat and get her spayed. Just remember for right now keep your beady little eyes on her and never let her out alone not even for a second.

I'm surprised she hasn't started already, before this. It will probably last a while longer. Get her spayed as soon as it passes.

Depending on the breed, heats start between 5-15 months (the larger the breeder, the later the first heat starts). A dog will then repeat heat about every 6 months. A heat typically lasts 3 weeks.

They usually have their first heat cycle at 6-8 months and then every 6 months if they are not spayed. The cycle can last a couple of weeks, if you are concerned have her checked out by your vet. If you are planning to spay her go ahead and have it done once she is out of heat. Spaying will also prevent some cancers and uterine infections, but also lower the risk of mammary cancer and the fewer the cycles the lower the risk.

Thanks for the question.... you reminded me to call the vet before our little Princess goes into heat again!!

With our girl she bleeds for between 3-4 weeks..ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! This happens twice a year. Our vet won't spay durring that time or for about 4 weeks after till the swelling goes down. Infact the 6 vet offices in our area that I called for pricing all told me that as well.

You can get her spayed, even when she is in heat. Make an appointment today and you can probably even get her in this week.
