Hello -

This morning my puppy ate an ENTIRE loaf of bread. I recovered a small amount of the plastic wrap. He is a golden ret mix, 7 months old. He just put his front paws on the kitchen counter & took the loaf of bread down and went to town! Bread is the only "food items" I "USED TO" leave on my counter tops. Well, he seems ok. I am @ work and will be home at 5pm. My mom checked on him a couple hours ago and my Dad is going around 3pm to check up on him again. Should I just watch him to see how he is acting? Should I call the vet immediatly? I don't want to over react but I love my puppy :) What are the signs I should look for..... loss of appetite....not going poo.... ? Thanks so much! Oh, by the way I was in the shower when this happened...my 8 year daughter was right there but of course she was watching TV and "didn't notice" lol - he can be very quiet and sneaky!

PS - not so concerned about the bread. I am just worried about the plastic :)

What can I do next?

I think he'll be fine. It's amazing what a dog can eat and not get sick. My dog has eaten a whole pan of brownies, a tube of Cortizon cream, a bottle of pepto bismol tablets, a 3" heel from a gucci shoe, a whole bag of peppermint nouggat candies (wrapers and all) and many many other things in his 9 years on this earth.

If he seems to be a little "stopped up" from all the bread, you feed him a can of pumpkin to loosen things up. :)

My wonderful Lab has eaten many loaves of bread, bag and all. What goes in, must come out. I always know which poop is his (we have two dogs) . They are sneaky. Mine has learned to open our pantry door. I have child locks on the tops of it for the dog, not the kids.
Im sure he will be just fine. You just need to watch for lethargy or no poop
That would mean the bag could be stuck in him I dont forsee that happening though since it is plastic

my lab ate several loaves of bread in her puppy hood, she is now three. watch to make sure the puppy eats and goes potty, you'll see the plastic soon. If she is straining to go and nothing is happening, call the vet, or vomiting or not eating. Chances are she'll be fine. Mine ate tons of stuff, they just do...even if you are doing your best to watch them. And by the way, at 3 we just had to start putting her back in her crate again, because after months of not counter surfing, she ate a loaf of bread and an empty cardboard box! seems like once they learn to counter surf it is a life long habit, and mine is sneaky too, only doe sit when we are not looking, and is very quiet! good luck, and I am sure she'll be fine

I'm laughing b/c our bassette hound ate entire raw chicken when I was a kid. My mom freaked and called the vet who immediately told her to 1) Put the dog OUTSIDE and 2) buy another chicken for dinner. The dog was fine, but had quite a tough time "outside" and stayed out there for several hours until nature had completely taken its course!

You can always call the vet for an expert opinion, but I wouldn't worry too much. Our dog ate six huge chocolate chip muffins from a bakery while we were out of the house. Grabbed the box off the counter top and helped himself. We worried because of the chocolate being dangerous to dogs, but apparently it's only in large quantities that you have to worry. The vet wasn't concerned. Our dog was totally fine; however, WE wanted those muffins so we were not happy!

Since it was bread, I wouldn't worry too much, but he may feel a little bloated for awhile, and have some bm issues. Just watch for anything out of the ordinary, and make sure that he gets lots of time outside.

My friend's golden has eaten drywall, and cash, and is still alive after 7 years. :) Our golden/lab is not allowed in the kitchen (we hear the click of the nails), and is in a kennel when we aren't home because she learned that food comes in plastic, and eats anything possible. I would watch for that "knowledge" developing.

Call your vet. One thing to be concerned about is bloating. The stomach can fill up with gas, and get so big it presses against the diaphragm, and make it difficult for the dog to breathe. If someone can check on him (as you have set up), that's great. Tell them to watch for a big belly, and an uncomfortable-looking pup. If he seems bloated, and/or is having trouble breathing, that warrants an immediate trip to the vets to get him fixed up.

Having said all this, he's probably going to be fine, but you should know what to look for. The plastic will probably pass through him OK, though again, any sign of lasting stomach upset should send you in for a check-up.

Best of luck, and have fun surviving his puppyhood! :-)

He's probably fine and he'll just poop out a plastic turd. Whenever they eat something strange there is a possibility of it creating an intestinal blockage but a 7 month old golden is a decent sized dog so it's not a huge possibility. When you see him poop out the plastic you can quit worrying. It should happen in a day or so. Yes, watch for loss of appetite. He'll be in pain too if there is a blockage, so you can see what his reaction is if you press on his stomach. You can always call your vet; they won't charge anything and if they can put your mind at ease it might be worth it.

Puppy might end feeling pretty bloated and uncomfortable - I would call your vet and see if they might get her to actually vomit, which could help her feel better sooner.

I don't think it would hurt to call the vet to ask for things to look for. I also have 2 pups that are eating everything they can get their paws on, so I feel your pain! My only concer would be that if she ingested a long strip of plastic and if it moves through the intestine as a long string it could be a problem. However, I don't know if plastic will be affected by stomach acid - if so, then no worries.

Good luck to you!

L. - Your post made me have flashbacks - and laughter. We used to own a black Lab - I had bought him as a gift for my husband. Zuess was our "First" dog together. That boy was crazy! - He ate EVERYTHING in sight. I had a distinctive pair of bright pink & white patterned socks ONCE.
I didn't realize that 1 was missing until I almost ran something over with the mower! Yes that sock had made it ALL THE WAY through my dog and come out the other end intact.
Some of the most dangerous things they can eat are corn cobs and fishing line/hooks. My dalmation almost choked to death on a block of cheese once! I had my hand down her throat trying to pull it out - she would not give it up! I had to massage it down her throat from the outside.
Dogs give you gray hairs too LOL

I would call the vet just to get their advice.

Most likely puppy will be fine but a phone call could help ease your mind.

We have dogs..... I know how creative they can be. I make Easter candy and my Cocker ate 12 individually wrapped with saran chocolate eggs. Because it was chocolate, per the vet, he instructed me on how to make her vomit and empty her belly. It was a LONG night but she was fine. This same dog got into the sugar bowl, ate a stick of butter and once managed to get the leftover meatloaf we had for dinner! We learned a long time ago..... make sure all chairs are fully pushed in at the table so our fur babies can't get to the table!!!

I hope your pup will be fine.

Why don't you give your vet a call? Tell about the plastic as well as the bread. If the vet isn't worried, he/she won't have you come in. There are foods fine for people that are dangerous for dogs, but I've never heard that bread is one of them. Our seven-month-old lab mix has eaten parts of plastic bags (is that her idea of recycling?) and hasn't had any ill effects. But it can't hurt to ask about it all. Your vet will tell you what to watch out for.

Seven-month-old pups are like big babies, and they'll try anything. In addition, Labs and Goldens are notorious for being "foodies." You'll want to put him in a safe place (safe for him and for your food!) for a while now when you can't keep an eye on him (i.e., showering - let him stay in the bathroom with you), and keep your counters clear of ALL foods, because you need to nip this sneaky-counter-surfing habit in the bud. You might even try spraying a bit of bitter apple on the counters and lower cabinets before you leave for work.

Mine hasn't tried the counter-surfing yet, but she raids trash baskets as if it were her solemn duty. If you were to come over to my house, you'd see trash baskets sitting on tables and beds during the day. She'll grow out of that eventually - and find something else to get into.

P.S. The American Kennel Club has put out a list of foods dangerous to dogs - it might be on their web site. Chocolate and grapes are on the list, plus raisins, macadamia nuts... there are more.
