My son just turned 3 and I am starting potty training with him. However, he is a big boy and I having a hard time finding pull ups or diapers that fit him. I took him to his 3 yr doctor's visit today and he is off the charts in weight and height. He is the size of an average 4.5 yr old. I have him in 4T-5T pull ups but they barely fit. I have tried Goodnites and UnderJams with him and the give him a horrible rash (it looks like he has been scalded every place the Goodnite or Under Jam were). What else can I put him in?

Skip the pull ups. They just confuse kids. They feel too much like a diaper. Do the "training" underwear that are extra thick/padded. Or regular underwear.

Underwear.
I never put my kids in pullups, it's just like a diaper. Put him in underwear and tell him that diapers just don't fit him anymore!! Isn't it GREAT that he is such a big boy!!! (big smiles)
Then get ready to clean up lots of underwear and pants...but if he can feel that he is wet or dirty he will figure out how to use the potty faster.
Good luck, lots of patience to you!!!

If it were me, I'd try large cloth diapers or training pants. It might seem like a step back, but please consider this: kids learn to use the toilet faster if they can feel they are wet. Wetting and *feeling it*, changing clothes-- all this is intrinsic to the toilet learning process. I have helped many, many kids learn to use the toilet over the past 19 years working with them, and have noticed that pull-ups/disposable diapers have ALWAYS prolonged the process. Battles have been fought about Pull Ups between parent and child, because they are too convenient for everyone. In fact, it's my theory that these manufacturers designed these products to prolong both the toilet learning process and their revenue-- the money out of your pocket.

We gave our 3 year old son the choice of cloth diapers (We'd been using disposables before) or training pants and he was using the toilet regularly very quickly. If you want more information on toilet learning and assessing readiness, here's a great link:

I've practiced several methods of "potty training" and have found this to be by far the most effective long-term.

Hi S.
I never used pull ups for toilet training. For me I think it lengthens the toilet training progress.
We toilet trained straight to underwear,"big boys pants" at two years old.
He peed and pooed all over the house as we were running with him to the toilet for the first week. After that he quickly got used to it and no accidents since.
Best of luck as it is fabolous to be rid of the nappies.

Skip the pull ups or easy ups except when you are going out. They just make training last longer. Training pants are messy but in the end you will be glad you used them.

I haven't read other answers yet but I'd go cloth training pants and once you are ready to give up the night time diapers but still want security something like Bummis or one of those. Yes it might mean more laundry but at least he won't get rashes. Also I will not do pull ups with my second son. It was really difficult to train my first son and I think part of it was a result of using pull ups.

You may want to look into cloth options. Happy Heiny's makes a super-absorbent training pant that goes up to really big sizes called the Happy Heiny's Pocket Trainer. I personally use them with my 5 year old who is not potty trained at night yet and we have been really happy with them.

I have a few in stock in my cloth diaper store, Babies Bottoms and More, if you'd like to come by and see one in person. Here's a link to find out more info about the cloth trainers:

Instead of pull-ups.... (I NEVER used those)... I use underwear by "Potty Scotty." It is padded underwear and real great. You can get it from Amazon or E-bay... for cheaper and in multi-packs.

My son, is a BIG TALL boy. And he wears the size xx-lg Potty Scotty underwear.
My son is the size of 5-6 year old.... even if he is 4 years old.

AND get some waterproof bed pads. Also from Amazon. I have 4 of them, that I rotate, if/when BOTH my kids wet the bed at night.
Night-time dryness... is not something biologically attained, until even 7 years old.
It makes clean up WAY easier... and you don't have to wash the entire bedding/sheets. Just put the waterproof bed pad, DIRECTLY under the child. Not under the fitted sheet. That is what I do.
I like the "quilted" type waterproof bed pads. I got it from Amazon. They have lots, of all kinds.

For my son, at naps and bedtime, I simply use a night time diaper... Huggies. And I also change him once during the night. He still gets his diaper real full, when sleeping.

And at night... be sure to put a diaper cream on him... to protect his skin. Use Desitin....

All the best,
Susan
