Pubic Bone Pain or "Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction"

Does anyone have any advice on what to do when you have pain during pregnancy in your pubic bone region? I did some research and it is considered a "normal thing" to happen during pregnancy but I sometimes can barely walk. It is especially painful at night when I try to roll over. I try to do it slowly but sometimes thats not possible and the pain wakes me up. It is worse than the discomfort of being so big. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I had that same pain in the pubic bone with both of my pregnancies. It is totally normal and nothing to worry about. It is annoying if anything, and goes away shortly after birth. I was a little sore for a little longer after my 2nd son but nonetheless, it is gone. I recall that pain and it was terrible in the 8th-9th month and I dreaded getting up out of bed. My Dr. was never concerned.. He said it is from all the pressure. I am glad to hear someone else has this. None of my friends had it and I felt like a friek.
Feel good. Hope this helps.

M.,

As a mother to 3 boys and someone who got very big with all 3 pregnancies there is not a whole lot you can really do. Try different positions. At night you can put a nice big pillow between your legs and knees to keep them apart, this helps to keep pressure off the pelvic area. I know this doesn't sound lady like, try not to sit with your legs to close together, your body is try to get ready for that baby to move through the pelvis and the pain is just your body's way of saying in need room.

Hope this helps.

When I was pregnant, the only thing that helped me with my low back and pubic bone pain was those heat up things that smell that you can get at the mall. You know the ones that the people who work at the kiosk chase you around to try? Those. They stink but there's something about whatever is in them that really helped with my pain. Just heat it up in the microwave for a few seconds and they really help. Just put it on your low back, neck, pubic bone- wherever it hurts. There's nothing you can do to make the pain go away (short of giving birth of course) but at least you can make yourself more comfortable.

I had the same thing happen to me w/babies #2 & #3. I remember that pain well. You might want to try to get some physical therapy. Alas, it is "just one of those things" w/pregnancy. I tried really hard to keep my weight gain to a minimum (while remaining healthy) just to avoid any added stress to my frame. I also had horrible rib pain. The docs told me part of the trouble was because I'm petite (5'2") & because I have lax joints so the pregnancy hormones made them even more lax, including my pelvis. Have the doctors ever told you that you have lax joints? As a side note, w/2 boys, if you do have lax joints, they might as well. You'll need to be careful about them yanking on each others' arms & dislocating them (nursemaid's elbow). We found out the hard way that my son had inherited my lax joints when his sister dislocated his elbow when he was a toddler. Good luck & hand in there. I found that sitting for long periods of time made the pain worse, so I stood around an awful lot.

HI,
I know what you mean. I too am getting that pain on & off especially laying in bed & trying to get up in the middle of the night.
My Dr said it's normal due to the shifting of our pelbic bones & the weight. He also said it could get better or could get worse. But I could take Tylenol if it gets really bad. My pain is getting a little better. It's not as bad as it was about 2weeks ago.
I did not experience this pain with my 1st pregnancy.
Now I am 6 1/2 mths pregnant & expecting another boy also due to be born around the 3rd or 4th of Januray via c-section.

Good Luck !
Lida

I can't offer any solutions, other than I sympathize. I'm 32 weeks pregnant, working full time, have a 23 month old daughter and am feeling the pelvic discomfort lately. I have 6-8 weeks more in store for me. Good luck!

I thought my pelvic was going to break during my two pregnancies.. especially when I rolled over at night. The pillow helps, a little. I would use a heating pad in the small of my back (a way from the baby and not tooo hot) You can try to prp your pillows so that you are in a sitting position.

Hope the oven is almost done. Best of luck!
