Proper and Safe Disposal or Reuse of Lighting and Mirrors

I recently remodeled the home we have for sale, but am left with the old versions of what I replaced - several (large) mirrors, light fixtures/bulbs, etc. that I no longer need. Any suggestions on how to find someone who could use them? Has anyone had luck with a local freecycle group? If reuse isn't possible, are there options to dispose of such items?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your ideas! I haven't yet found recipients for the mirrors & lighting, but I was able to "freecycle" an extra freezer, which was great!

Hi J.:

I would definitely try a local freecycle group. I belong to one and I have had great luck freecycling a lot of items. You could also try your local Habitat for Humanity group too. They might be remodeling a home and could use the items you have available.

Yes! Post your items on the freecycle website and you'd be surprised what people can have a use for. This keeps items out of the waste stream and gets them off your hands for free. How much better can it be? The best part is you can state what is best for you in terms of the items being picked up (ie: nights, weekends, times, etc.). I've used the local freecycle (Schaumburg) group to give things away and to get things that I needed. Good luck!

the free cycle groups are a great place, I have place and received items from them. Mirrors are well liked and I would not think that you would have a hard time getting rid of yours.

My suggestion is to join your local FreeCycle group. Go to www.freecycle.org and find the group in or closest to your community. It's free, and someone else will benefit from the items you no longer need. I use FC all the time, and it's wonderful.

One mans trash is anothers treasure. Freecycle works very well, you post an offer people respond and drive to you to pick up.

J.,
It's not the exact same, but my husband and I recently replaced our glass shower doors and to our surprise the regular recycle pick up took them. You might want to call the city or the company that does your pick up.

Freecycle worked for us with some old computer monitors/machines and with a broken hot tub.

I've had tons of luck with Freecycle. I don't know where you live, but Bartlett has a great community of Freecyclers. Go to www.freecycle.org then look for your town. Even if you don't find one in your area, feel free to post your offerings to another group.

If you can't find good homes for your items, you should be able to give the mirrrors to Goodwill, not sure if they'll take the fixtures.
Good luck.

Hi J.,

My Fiancé works for 1-800-Got-junk, the company takes anything except for chemicals. All you have to do is call the company set up a time for them to come, they will come to your house and get the items and clean up any mess as well.

I hope this helps.
