Hello Moms,

I am now 4 weeks pregnant after suffering a miscarriage earlier this year and my doctor has prescribed me progestorone prochieve after a conversation with me asking what it was. I was never tested for low levels of progestorne or show any signs that they are low. He kind of just said to me, "let's pull out all the stops". I asked him if I in fact didn't need the Prochieve then would me taking it harm me and he answered no. Has anyone ever used this during early pregnancy before? Was it successful in preventing a miscarriage? Any weird side effects? Help! I need info fast. Thank you in advance for your positive input!

What can I do next?

I was put on Prometrium for pregnancies #3, 5, and 6. The first two pregnancies I did not take any supplemental progesterone and they both miscarried. Number 4 was ectopic so nothing would have helped it. Anyway, I had no side effects whatsoever except carrying the babies to term. That in itself would have made any side effect worthwhile since it had been six years since we had started trying...I DID NOT want another miscarriage.
Have you had a successful pregnancy before? If so, this miscarriage was probably just one of those unfortunate events that happen to 20-25% of women. If this is a pattern though, I wouldn't hesitate to accept any help at all. And if you take the progesterone and miscarry again, then there may be some other underlying problem.
I wish you the best!

Congratulations! And I'm sorry for your earlier loss.
I had 3 miscarriages, was prescribed the progesterone suppositories upon my 4th pregnancy, and I now have a child. So it "worked" for me....I think. Could be coincidence. We'll never know. I was never "tested" for low progesterone levels either.
Some OB's think it "works" some don't.
Luckily, your doc is proactive and has not made you wait to see a "pattern" of miscarriage!

I used them with my 1st & 2nd pregnancies, as my levels were low. No side effects, other than some messy discharge.

My mother used them after suffering 3 miscarriages in a row. After the 3rd one they told her she had low progesterone. She went on to have 2 more successful pregnancies after being put on progesterone.

I used it for all my pregnancies that did NOT end in miscarriage. It was a lets pull out the stops after 5 m/cs...and I do think it helped.

My progesterone numbers were normal but low on the normal scale...so we tried it and it I now have two beautiful children...I was also taking a baby aspirin everyday as a precaution to clotting disorders as well.

Bless you, I know how hard it is to lose a pregnancy and be so worried about the next one. HUGS!!!

I was given a progesterone suppository for a week during early pregnancy and it did prevent miscarriage, after having 2 miscarriages. I have one child. I did have another miscarriage, but since I never knew when I was pregnant (due to low progesterone and no symptoms), I didn't get the suppository the 4th time.

But, yes, it worked. This was 18 years ago :) and I haven't heard of Prochieve. Best of luck to you & God bless!

i had the progestrone pill preascribed after a misscarriage and was deemed higgh risk the 2nd time, b/c they tested and everything with the baby thta miscarried at 12 weeks was fine, so the 2nd time arnd I took this pill for the 1st 12 weeks and I have my daughter...as far as side effects, IDK I got sick for 7 months but I doubt it was that, b/c i had bad morning sickness with the misscarriage preg too

Hi L.-

Congratulations on your preganancy. I say.... keep taking the progestrone suppositories. It worked for me! I used it very early on in my pregnancy.... like within the first week. (My IVF doctor prescribed it and although it seemed a bit "different" inserting a large pill "down there", there was such a comfort that it would help me maintain a healthy pregnancy. I did deliver early at 30 and a half weeks but I feel it had nothing to do with the suppositories. Take preventive measures and keep using it! My twins are such a delight and they are happy, healthy, and bright almost 10 year olds!

Blessings-
J.

I'm using it now. Progesterone CAN'T hurt you, only help. I'm 6 1/2 months now and have been on it.. I didn't start mine until week 16 (two weeks after my cerclage..) It does seem a little weird that he's not waiting until 12 weeks.. My doc wanted to make sure I could at least carry that far, then get through the cerclage THEN he started the progesterone.. that way I didn't carry a baby that might not have made it (for health reasons etc) the only thing I can tell you is that I get mine from a compounding pharmacy and the ONLY side effect I have is that the next morning it can sometimes smell bad and it's a little messy. I do the suppository at night and just slap in a panty liner. I had been on the shot (which was HELL) and I was having migraines every week.. I think what I'm on now is a more constant, steady dose and it's amazing.

I would say absolutely take them if you can. We also had a miscarriage with our first, and I have since taken progesterone with my 3 successful pregnancies, with no problems! We have 3 healthy daughters!
I didn't notice any side effects, other than being a little messy "down there," sort of like if you've had to take yeast infection medication. But it's definitely worth it to help keep those levels high enough to carry the pregnancy through. You should only need to take them throughout your first trimester.
Hope that helps!
