Progesterone Use in Early Pregnancy

So I am wondering... if you used progesterone in your early pregnancy, did you use a vaginal suppository or did you take a pill by mouth? I have had two successful pregnancies where I used the vaginal suppositories for the first trimester. They were messy and had to be inserted twice a day. My doctor gave me the option to use the oral progesterone, and I'm considering it this time. Any suggestions? What is your experience? Do you prefer one over the other?

What can I do next?

I used both methods when I was pregnant. I absolutely vote for taking the pill! :)
The suppository was messy & difficult - not to mention that we had to have mine made specially at a pharmacy that would do that (NOT close by! and NOT cheap!) because I needed a different dose (I think - it's been 5 years). And they had to be kept in the fridge... yuck! :D
I was way more comfortable with the pill - it was just less work. :)

With both pregnancies I took oral progesterone and it was fine. I carried and delivered two healthy babies.

I had to use progesterone suppositories throughout my entire pregnancy. What a pain. I asked my doctor if I could use the oral progesterone and she said that it was not as effective as progesterone taken vaginally and there is a higher chance of side effects. Good luck!

after 3 miscarriages I took the pill for 2 successful pregnancies. I was never offered the suppositories I was told I would be fine with just taking the pill version!

I did the suppositories and the shot in the butt. My doc said that suppositories and shot are much more potent and go directly where they need to go than the pills.

I took the oral Prometrium with two pregnancies. With the first, my low progesterone levels weren't identified until I was 8 weeks pregnant. Even with starting the progesterone, I miscarried a week later. With my next pregnancy, my progesterone levels were checked the day I found out I was pregnant and I started the Prometrium as soon as the low results were determined resulting in a healthy full-term pregnancy.

my reproductive endocrinologist and my OB both insist that the vaginal suppositories are MUCH more effective than the oral or injectable forms of progesterone.

Have you considered another alternative? They do have bio-identical progesterone cream that you rub into your skin at various places on your body like your thighs, upper arms, behind knees, inner elbows. This is what I use, and it is wonderful!

I used the pills for two successful pregnancies. I have never used the suppositories. I can't imagine wanting to use the suppositories. I had a different OB/GYN the second time around and they both gave me the pills. My BFF also took the pills.

I've had two miscarriages and 3 healthy pregnancies. When I got pregnant with my now 4th pregnancy, I was told by my OB that my progesterone levels were low and they started me immediately on the suppository form. The nurse also went on to say that if my progesterone levels had been checked early enough with my previous miscarriage pregnancies, then there might have been a different outcome. So far, 8 mnths later I no longer take the progesterone and everythiings great with baby. I would say stick to what you know has worked in the past just to be safe. Congrats and good luck with eveything!

I tried the supositories and had one sucessful pregnancy and one unsucessful pregnancy on them. I also had one sucessful and five unsuccessful pregnancies without any progesterone. This is my ninth pregnancy and the gave me Metformin (a diabeties 2 drug) when we were trying to get pregnant, one of the side effects is ovulation. They kept me on the the first trimester but also add prometrium at three or four weeks for added support. So far this had been a good pregnancy, and they say it is a girl after two boys. I prefer the oral personally they were less messy, less expensive and more redily availible.
