HI! I AM ASKING THIS QUESTION ABOUT MY SISTER IN LAW. SHE RECENTLY (6/06) HAD A MISCARRIAGE DURING HER FIRST PREGNANCY. SHE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT 5 WEEKS AGO THAT SHE IS PREGNANT AGAIN. SHE HAS BEEN AT THE DOCTORS ABOUT 4 TIMES ALREADY AND ALTHOUGH HE ASSURES HER EVERYTHING IS OK...WE ARE WORRIED. HE IS DOING AN ULTRASOUND AGAIN (SHE IS ONLY 5 WEEKS AND HAS ALREADY HAD ONE!!!) (ALTHOUGH HE SAYS THINGS ARE FINE) AND IS HAVING HER HCG LEVEL DRAWN ONCE A WEEK. I AM CONFUSED AS I TOO HAD A MIS. WITH MY FIRST PREGNANCY AND WHEN I HAD MY HCG LEVELS DRAWN, I HAD THEM DONE TWO DAYS APART TO SEE IF THEY DOUBLED. WELL, SHE HAD THE DOCTOR CALL HER YESTERDAY (AND OF COURSE SHE MISSED THE CALL AND DIDN'T RECEIVE THE MESSAGE UNTIL AFTER THE OFFICE WAS CLOSED) AND HE CALLED AGAIN FIRST THING THIS MORNING AND TOLD HER HE HAD CALLED IN A SCRIPT FOR PROGESTERONE PILLS AND TO HAVE THEM FILLED AND BEGIN TAKING THEM IMMEDIATELY. HE AGAIN, ASSUURED HER EVERYTHING WAS FINE BUT IT WAS JUST PRECAUTIONERY!!! (?) I KNOW THAT HCG LEVELS NOT DOUBLING AND LOW PROGESTERONE LEVELS ARE INDICATIVE OF AN IMPENDING MISCARRIAGE, BUT HAS ANYONE LESE EVER HAD TO TAKE THEM AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE? AND HAS ANYONE HAD HCG LEVELS DRAWN ONCE A WEEK AS OPPOSSED TO EVERY 2 DAYS? AND HOW ABOUT AN ULTRASOUND EVERY WEEK THIS EARLY INTO A PREGNANCY? I HAVE A PRETTY DECENT MEDICAL BACKGROUND, BUT THIS (OBVIOUSLY) WORRIES ME AND CONFUSES ME. I WORK IN THE MEDICAL FIELD AND NOBODY THAT I WORK WITH HAS EVER HEARD OF THIS EITHER!!! PLEASE!!!!! IF THERE IS ANYBODY THAT CAN HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! I THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!

What can I do next?

When I was pregnant with my last 2 kids I took progesterone as a precaution. The first one I was having a lot of bleeding. With the second my progesterone was to low and my doc was concerned about miscarriage. Both of my girls were born full term and fine. My doctor also did a TON of sonograms. If you dont mind me asking who is her doctor?

I did all the high risk pregnancy 3 times...! Progesterone ia a hormone necessary to maintain a pregnancy. Usually it a vaginal suppository, twice a day for 12-15 weeks. Worse case, rectal suppos. The baby starts making the progesterone around 12 weeks itself. I usually had 3-4 ultrasounds during my pregnancies...1st to assure it was a viable ovum and (6 weeks}+ attached...next for proper size/development..then abnormalities around 20 weeks and again around 32. Once you've had a miss, good doctors will be really careful to maintain your sanity. Good luck!

I had a m/c and then after that I took progesterone AS SOON as I found out i was pg with both my boys. Just in case. Just to check off one reason why I might of m/c. all my pregancies were clomid kids and my friend is currently ttc and is using clomid also. Her doc has her on progesterone starting day 14 of each cycle until her period starts. Just in case even though her levels were ok. Nothing wrong with it. It only helps.

This all sounds pretty normal to me as I went through the same process. I had 2 miscarriages and then went to see a specialist and he put me on progesterone suppositories to maintain the pregnancy. I would go in weekly for them to draw blood and check my progesterone levels, HCG & estradial. I ended up having a wonderful little girl 2 days over due! During the first 14 week I also had an ultrasound every 2 weeks.

Hi J.
I too had a miscarriage. As I am sure you kno it is something that you can never get over. Now it didn't make it any easier but I feel miscarriage is sort of a natural selection, it's a way to take care of something that could be devastating (some kind of handicap) I think it is awesome that they are even checking her hcg levels and doing weekly ultrasounds. You work in the medical feild so I would think that you would kno that this early in pregnancy there is nothing they can do once a miscariage starts. I have read where doctors take the approach that a doomed pregnancy is a doomed pregnancy, and then there are doctors who will put a mother on bed rest until she miscarriages any way. There are a lot of beliefs in the medical field that the majority of women will experience at least one miscarriage in her healthy reproductive years and maybe for your sister that was her one and only and that she will be mommy now. All I can say is good luck and let everyone kno what happens!!

Hi J.,

I took progesterone as a precaution and it was something that i requested because I'd had 2 miscarriages before my successful pregnancy. In each case, the fetus miscarried about 10-12 weeks because of low progesterone. Everything else seemed to be fine and with the third, (I used progesterone suppositories because they enter into the blood stream more quickly), I successfully carried my baby boy to term. I only took them for 12 weeks, after that, my hormone levels were rising on their own and doing well without the extra "help".
