Inform me....LOL! I need real-people accounts!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the replies! I have had recurring tummy troubles of all sorts for the last 2+ years. Tested positive for H.Pylori...had an ulcer that mostly cleared up, but ever since those weeks of meds, I have had issues on and off. (TMI~ but here goes)...horrilbe gas, uncomfortable bloating, weight I just can not take off, potty issues, heartburn, pain in various places inside. I just can't get it to all be "normal" for more than a few weeks. I have determined that dairy products REALLY mess me up..IMMEDIATELY. So I am trying to mostly eliminate them (its so hard, even when I hate milk and cheese and such..they are IN so many things).

I just wondered if the probiotics might help me?

I drink a little bottle of yakult daily. I used to be constipated all the time. Yakult coupled with a high fiber, plenty of water diet is working for me.

Probiotics are GREAT! I get a lot of yeast infections while pregnant and probiotics help get rid of them and keep them away. They contain 14 billion different kinds of good bacteria. I use the PB8 brand. If you take 2 daily when you do not have a yeast infection then it will keep you from getting one. If you take 2 daily when you have a yeast infection it will help get rid of it. I forget to take 2 daily constantly so when I get a yeast infection I start taking my 2 daily pills along with a 5-7 day vaginal cream treatment. The combination takes care of the problem immediately. Probiotics are perfectly safe during pregnancy. They were actually recommended to me by my midwife during my second pregnancy.

I had a recent problem with passing a stool, doc said on top of Milk of mag, i should use probiotics, you can buy them anywhere, or you can get them through some forms of yogurt as seen on tv. I have been doing the one seen on tv, we are not allowed to mention products here, but i am sure you know which one i am talking about. It really seems to work and taste great. There is a lot of information on the web, just google it and see the benefits of it.

Helps regulate the natural and healthy bacteria in your GI tract and aids in keeping your immune healthy...It also helps the female flora stay balanced. If you are a yeast infection sufferer this is a God Send. I swear other than a Sinus infection, I stay healthy between taking these and some extra vitamin D. I buy the Probiotic through my nutritionist. It is called Ultra Flora plus and you keep it refregierated. Tablet form :)

My son had been on antibiotics at least once a month for the past year. Ugh. The probiotics have helped out putting back the good bacteria which was killed off with anti. He has also has had a lot of bowel problems because of the antibiotics. Originally my doctor had him on a laxative, and a lot of it. I have cut out 90% of the laxative and put him on a probiotic. Occasionally I have to up the laxative if my son hasn't had enough fiber an pro-biotic.
I also had a family friend who was on and antibiotic, she then collapsed and had to go to the hospital. It turns out that the antibiotic killed EVERYTHING and woke up a dormant disease or virus and killed half of her intestines. Her doctor said that if she had a yogurt a day, it shouldn't have happened. She is fine now, but had to be on a colustrom bag (spelling, it's one of those bags where your fecal and urine go and it's on the outside of the body) the dead intestines were removed and 2 years later she's doing better, but not anywhere like she used to be.
Anywho, Im a huge pro-biotic person. Love them.

Just be aware that Dannon got in a whole bunch of trouble for their commercials claiming that probiotics (in their DanActive and Activia products) are so beneficial. If you've noticed that their Activia commercials are all new, and are now sort of vague about 'taste good' and 'make me feel better', it's because the FDA clamped down on them for their unproven claims, and slapped them with a HUGE fine. So, it's not that probiotics are bad, but they are not a cure-all. If you get results from them, fine. But there are many other things that people can do nutritionally, and usually that involved a comprehensive supplement with all of the necessary ingredients together, rather than people choosing specific products (this vitamin, that mineral, this probiotic) and hoping for miracles! So, be aware of what claims you hear and believe. It seems every commercial is for a drug (with side effects) or some miracle product - we have a health crisis in this country, and these companies are capitalizing on our worry and throwing single-ingredient or single-drug "solutions" at us. So how come so many people are still in trouble?

Probiotics are necessary for good intestinal health. Did you know that much of our immune system is in our intestines?

Problem: Keeping the microflora ALIVE until it reaches the intestines

Solution: Make sure that the probiotic you purchase is GUARANTEED to deliver LIVE flora to your intestines.

A problem with yogurt that says it has live bacteria in it, is that it may only be alive in the processing plant. The flora can die en route to the grocery store, while on the refrigerated shelves in the store, in your grocery bag on the way home, in your refrigerator, and most importantly, die IN YOUR STOMACH ACID.

The probiotic I use has 500 million of the 2 most proven bacteria to make a difference and is triple encapsulated so it makes it all the way to the colon, baby! ;)

Hope that helps!

Probiotics are good bacteria that normally live in the intestinal tract. Through antibiotics, eating too much of this or not enough of that, the good bacteria can either die off or decrease in numbers so that a person is not thoroughly or properly digesting their food or having normal bowel movements. Probiotics are always good and will help to add more good bacteria to the intestinal tract. You can get them in pill form, powdered form, or from food. Yogurt and sauerkraut are good sources. If you add yogurt to get probiotics, make sure the package says, "Contains live active cultures."

My doctor suggested giving culturelle to my 2 and 3 year old when they were taking antibiotics. It comes in a capsule form, so I would just break the capsule open and dissolve it in some water to prevent a choking hazard. Sometimes my kids would get a terrible yeasty rash from antiobiotics, so the probiotics helped restore the balance in their system. It can't hurt to take them and some people take probiotics every day, but I just use it as needed. It did help. My mom also takes it-again mostly for rash related problems. Hope this helps!

I tried them because I had similar tummy problems to you and they didn't seem to work. I was then diagnosed with IBS and lactose intolerance. I've been able to tame the IBS symptoms and gas/bloating/heartburn/pains/constipation by avoiding milk in it's whole form (I put cream in my coffee every morning without issue still), no ice cream, little cheese, no yogurt, etc. I really miss yogurt. I can eat small amount of cheese (most lactose intolerant people can tolerate small amounts) and cheddar and swiss are lactose free. I can also eat butter without problems. The other weird food I've found aggravates my symptoms are potato chips and crackers. I have no idea why, but they make me really crampy so I avoid them. Fast food/junk food in general seem to do the same thing, but we eat them pretty rarely. Oatmeal makes me feel great though, yesterday I was having a yucky morning and I ate some for lunch and felt like a million bucks. Good luck, Mama.

I should add that yogurt is a great useful source of healthy probiotic bacteria - the probiotics I took that weren't useful were in capsule form because I can't tolerate yogurt. IF I could, I would eat yogurt everyday because I believe the health benefits are real and excellent for your GI tract.
