Probiotics for Pets?

So I definitely am a believer in probiotics. We got the kids a kitten a few weeks ago. This kitten was bottle fed, as it was part of an abandoned litter that our friends took in and raised them until they were old enough to be adopted.
We have another cat, and I've had a few other cats growing up, and let me say, this kitten's stools are FOUL!
I am thinking because the kitten may not have had much "mommy's milk" from the mommy cat, her gut flora is off.
I cannot deal with the smell coming from the litterbox now, it's crazy bad, and I don't even have a good sense of smell.

So I think probiotics would be a good idea. Where do you buy them for a cat/kltten?

What can I do next?

Have the kitten seen at the vet first and bring a fresh stool sample along. More likely the kitten has intestinal parasites - roundworms, Giardia, etc. It needs to be treated for those first before you start messing around with probiotics. I will use them for adult animals if I think they have something going on that probiotics will actually help, but in this case I think intestinal parasites and possibly adjusting to a new diet is more likely. With kids in the picture, it is very important to get the kitten treated correctly - some these parasites can be passed on to people if they getting even microscopic amounts of fecal material on their hands and then sticking their hands or fingers in their mouth without washing them. Don't try picking something up at the pet store either and treating the kitten yourself - take her to the vet. She will need an overall check-up to make sure she's healthy, a stool sample examined, and possibly started on vaccines.

I would talk to your vet. There are some probiotics for pets, but dosage could be different depending on size and age. Have a stool check done too if you haven't already (lots of parasites make very stinky kitten poop), along with the first set of vaccines she is due for or second set depending on age and if she has already been to the vet. Also has she been tested for feline leukemia and FIV yet? The type of food she is now eating will make a difference too. I have bottle fed before and never noticed a change in smell based on that. I have also used probioitics for our dog as needed, they were prescribed by our vet.

Enjoy your new family member.

This is a question you need to ask your vet. The kitty needs a checkup as well.

Have you had the kitten checked for parasites? Coccidia and giardia can both cause rancid-smelling diarrhea.
If you're going to give the kitten probiotics, ask your vet to recommend one.

You're going to bring kitty to the vet for vaccines, blood testing and stool check? You can check with the veterinarian or technician while you are there.

Along with a check up at the vet you can find animal probiotics at any pet store, on-line and even in some supermarkets.

The kitten may not be tolerating the particular brand of kitten food you've gotten..... is she getting cow's milk? Many cats are lactose intolerant, and yes, their stool is nasty smelling in that case.

I would suggest taking her to the vet for a check-up and see what they suggest.... she may also be needing vaccinations at this point since she wasn't getting the immunities from the mother.

My cat has done great with Feline Fortiflora. Helped loose stinky poops. If the poop is negative for giardia also check into sensitive tummy food. Mine does well on Spots stew by Halo.
