Private vs Public School in Lewisville/Flower Mound

We're interested in putting our 4-yr old daughter in private school starting fall 2009. She's currently in a Montessori preschool and is doing incredibly well. The concepts they cover and understand sometimes astound me. I'm honestly afraid that she'll be beyond a lot of the standard kindergarten material when she starts "real" school.

I have no problem with public education in general, as long as the local school is good quality. The local elementary for us is Valley Ridge Elementary School in Lewisville. Home schooling is out because of my job. My real question, I guess, is: Are private schools really any better than public? What are the best private schools in Lewisville/Flower Mound? What kind of experiences have others had with Valley Ridge Elementary?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your input! I think we'll go the public school route. As parents, it's our responsibility to keep our child stimulated and interested in learning. We can't depend on a school, public or private, to do that for us.

My kid is no genius, but her IQ test results show her in the top 5% of the population. Please don't roll your eyes, this is not a brag, it's a real concern of mine. Read the recent Time Magazine cover story about raising an exceptionally smart child and you'll see what I mean. The dropout rate for the upper-limit IQ children is just as high as for below-average children. I feel as much responsibility to find the best help for my daughter as I would if she had special needs.

Lewisville/Flower Mound schools rank one of the best in the state. I know a lot of the parents at Valley Ridge, our sons do Cub Scouts there they are the best. Still public/private is a family decision. Check out lisd.net for information about the district and the school, each school has their own website.

My older son went to Windmill for Pre-K because it also offered an afterschool daycare enviroment for working parents. That worked out great, we went straight to 1st grade in the public school. Similar program on Edmonds and Old Orchard.

Good Luck!

R.,
I really believe the public schools in Flower Mound are excellent. The reason people I know that have chosen private over public here, has more to do with what the parents want (some are 3 days of school with 2 days of home school, most are religious based, etc... not that they're anymore advanced).

I'd start your daughter in public school. The LEAP program is available to gifted and talented children which your daughter would be tested for if she shows advanced abilities.

School gets so much harder later than kindergarten... the demands on time etc are heavy in middle and high-school. So even gifted children have a challenging time dealing with school.

How is school going for your daughter? Not sure that you need any more input, but I wanted to tell you about a school that promises "no child left unchallenged". My kids attend Explorations Prep in Flower Mound because they were ahead of the school curriculum and being pulled-out for a few hours a week for a gifted program wasn't enough to keep them interested and inspired. Explorations Prep is a hands-on school with an emphasis in science and math (they also have spanish, french, music, art and PE). We love it! If you want more information, I would be happy to discuss.
Best of luck!

Valley Ridge is an excellent school. Both of my boys have gone to school there (one still is). I have found that the teachers are all very caring as is the support staff. My oldest son had several learning issues that would not have been found or addressed had it not been for his 2nd grade teacher. I owe his ability to succeed to her and the staff at that school! There are a lot of schools that are equal but finding one better will be hard IMHO.

From what I understand public and private really go hand and hand when it comes to here in TX. Just make sure you check the school's rating (Valley Ridge is Excellent I believe). My battle right now is to send my daughter to a school outside of our zoning. I have a couple years to figure it all out she just turned 3.
Good Luck!

That's a very personal decision. There is no BEST school for everyone--it depends on what your child needs.
For us, a Christian atmosphere was important and I personally wanted a major role in my children's education. As a former liberal arts major, I am also more into exposing my children in the classics rather than the more modern methods and literature so we chose Coram Deo for the classical Christian education and parent/teacher partnership--it's half home school.
If you are a big fan of Montessori, you may want to find a Montessori based grade school; there is one that goes to grade 1 on Old Orchard I believe.
I strongly suggest you write down your main priorities for your child's education for school and then see which school best fits those needs.
Good luck!

I am battling this question myself even though I have a long time before I have to make a decision. Public schools in the Lewisville have a pretty good reputation. It depends on what is a good fit for your child. Some students thrive in a public school and others might do better in a private school.
