I have a 3 1/2 year old grandson who is going to speech therapy 2 days a week thru the school district. His teacher says he needs to be in preschool and have the exposure to other kids his age. His parents do not have the funds to send him and I am disabled and on a fixed income. I am hoping to find a school that has a scholarship for families who are struggling. We live in Laguna Niguel. Thank you!

B.,
Also, another great way to socialize your grandson would be storytime at your local library or a local playgroup. I know you can check your local library on www.ocpl.org (this is the website for the orange county public libraries.) Good luck!

I am a speech-language pathologist that used to work at Providence Speech and Hearing Center in Orange. They may have a scholarship for their preschool program, especially for children with speech-language needs. Their number is ###-###-####. I hope this helps!

Dear B.,
I believe you are in the Capistrano Unified School District? If you call the school district office in San Juan Capistrano, they can give you a list of the elementary schools that offer preschools with "scholarships". I think that scholarship is not the right word. I believe it is "fee based preschools" but I'm not 100% sure. I do know, though, that families on lower incomes can definitely qualify to put their children in very good preschools through the school district. They are taking enrollments for next school year right now!! Good luck!!

Contact the Children's Home Society in your area; probably in Anaheim for Orange County. They have a referral service; possibly subsidy for those that need it.

Good Luck

Check with your local public elementary school. Chances they have a program to teach 3-year-olds with "disabilities".

My son was evaluated by the school district for speech and language services at age 3 and he qualified for the Language Based Preschool 5 days per week at Don Juan Avila. It was paid for by the school district. I wonder if your grandson would qualify for that program? Your daughter may need to request a meeting to review his IEP, if it is not coming up soon. The Capistrano Unified School District also has state funded preschool programs for income sensitive families, but I think it is a full 5 day/week program. There is also a very affordable "co-op" called Laguna Participation Preschool, where parents/grandparents help out at the school resulting in lower tuition (approx $100/mo). Hope some of this helps!

Several of the area public schools (including Crown Valley in Laguna Niguel) have state funded preschool for people who fall into a certain income bracket. Call the school district to find out more! www.capousd.org.

Also, the YMCA (I think) in LN does a parent participation preschool that you could probably take your grandchild too. I think the school district does this too so def. ask about it when you call them.
