I am confused with the process of preschool and how to get my 4yr old in a program, I down loaded a bunch of papers and it wanted copies of every one in my familys birth records and ssn. and what i understood as 345.00 a month, I'm not sure I am reading this information correctly. I am not interested in a day care situation but a program that is offered at one of the local schools

What can I do next?

Hi,
My suggestion is contact the local schools around you and ask them if they have a preschool at their location.I know some schools don't.
Hope this helps you.

M., what you want to look into is the VPK (Voluntary PreKindergarten) program offered. They are free and offered as some local schools and daycare facilities. Check the website www.myflorida.com/childcare and look for VPK providers. Hope this helps. A.

If you're looking for VPK, look up www.elcpolk.org. This is the website for the Early Learning Coalition, which administers VPK. It will tell you all about it and list all the schools in Polk County that offer VPK. Some local schools do offer VPK, but they're not necessarily free; they are usually all-day programs, and parents pay based on income, just as a child might pay a reduced lunch cost (or even eat free) if the family's income allows him to qualify in a public school. Two of my children have gone to VPK programs, and they benefitted tremendously. I'm not sure, though, if you can start VPK this time of year; call the ELC - they'll help you. Good luck!
Corrction: I forgot - some preschools do offer summertime programs, and they may be all day programs...again, just look up ELC.

Have you looked in Waldorf education? Check www.suncoastwaldorf.com. I helped to found this school 10 years ago. It's located on Curlew Road between CR 1 and Belcher. Nothing else like it! Takes children from age 3 to Grade 8. Waldorf schools began in Germany in 1919. Contact me or the school if you wish any further information.

If you are looking ofr VPK, the state funded program, there are a variety of places that do this. The program is free, but the daycare around it isn't. College Heights United Methodist has a VPK, and I think there are a few spots. There is no fee for this and they are open 9-12 every day, M-F. Their phone is ###-###-####. They also have classes for the younger groups, 2-4 MWF from 9-12, there is a charge for those.

If you are located in Pinellas, check out http://www.childcarepinellas.org/. They run VPK program here. There is a list of providers and other information. You have to go to one of their offices to enroll in person and then take the voucher they give you to the school you choose. Pretty easy process.

You can enroll in the VPK program, which I am doing with my son. I registered him at Kinder Kare (off of 56). They have a preschool program that is 3 hrs a day 5 days a week. What you do is get a voucher from the state and then it is free for the year. If you contact some schools in your area they will let you know where you can go to pick up the voucher. Each school also breaks it up differently, meaninghtat some schools do 3 5 hour days a week and others do 5 3 hour days.

Good Luck,
J.

It sounds like you may be trying to apply for a sliding scale fee preschool? Lower incomes/kids with needs come first and then the rest taken on a sliding scale. I am not positive, but that's what it sounds like with them wanting SSN and all.

If you're looking for a free pre-k for your child, then look into the VPK program. You child has to be entering Kindergarten the next school year (Aug 08 or 09 depending on when birthday is). Most of the VPK programs are half day, with the option to pay for a the other half of the day. Here is a link: http://www.floridajobs.org/VPK/index.html

You want your child in the Florida VPK Program. If he has not attended VPK yet he is eligible. I am a Certified Teacher and I teach VPK. If you are in the Wesley Chapel area I know my private school has room for a summer VPK program.

Secondly, the only thing you need is your child’s birth certificate, ssn, and proof of residency. You do not have to pay any money. For information regarding Pasco
County VPK go to: http://www.phelc.org/home.html and for overall state info. go to: http://www.floridajobs.org/VPK/index.html

Good Luck!

M.,

I'm not really sure what that information you stated above is for. Usually if you want to enroll your child into preschool you don’t need to go through that process. I just went through the VPK process for my 4 year old. Its not income based, its a voluntary FREE program for 4 year olds. You child can attend a local daycare facility or public school for 3 hours a day (usually from 9am-Noon) Mon-Fri and its free. All I had to do was bring a copy of my child’s birth certificate and fill out a little form that asked for my address and phone number. It was a 5 minute process. If that’s what your trying to do, let me know and I can give you number to call. If you looking for something else, let me know and I can see if I can help you. I've been through many processes with my other child. Good Luck!!
