Prepaid Cell Phone Suggestions

Moms,

I am seeking a prepaid cell phone for my kids for emergency purposes only. I do not want to add the phone to my account and incur a monthly charge or contract. I tried the tracphone but my zip code is not in the service area. I want something I can load minutes on it as I go and not worry about the minutes expiring within 30 to 60 days. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
A.

What can I do next?

kajeet.com has cell phones just for kids and I think the lowest is $4.99 a month. I believe it is monthly but there is no contract.

In the past I've used both Virgin and Verizon mobile. They are well priced and minutes don't ''expire''.

I use Virgin. You can buy a cheap phone from them which usually comes with free airtime. You do have to "top up" every 90 days i think which to me is reasonable. I "top up" for $15 every 90 days. since i don't use my phone too much it's a very reasonable price to pay for an "emergency" phone.

I have tried them all with my youngest for the same reasons you have, I would highly recommend the ATT GoPhone. It is a way better deal than any of the others especially if you have ATT phones and your family. It is a dollar a day (only the days you use it) to call any ATT phone. Hope this helps!

Try Virgin Mobile. I use them for myself and have a monthly plan that automatically charges to my cell phone. I got a plan from them for my parents who only need a cell phone for emergency situations. They have various plans where you can only pay for the minutes you use and you can put $X dollars in the account and when the money is running low, you'll get notified. I've been using them for about 3 to 4 years now and really love them. FYI: for my phone plan with unlimited texts, 300 anytime minutes, unlimited internet access, it is $27 a month with taxes & fees.

T-Mobile is supposed to be awesome, but it's not available in our area. Ironically, Trac-phone is and it works great!
In my opinion, pre-paid is the only way to go to start kids out because they can only use the minutes paid for. No surprise huge bills. My son was so responsible, he had minutes left over.

I hope you get some great responses for your area.

We have straight talk for my daughter. If you go to thier website straighttalk.com you can sometimes even get the phone free...it's $30 a month for 1000 text 1000 minutes and so many GB of internet.

I have an old T-mobile Crazor and it's loaded up on pre-paid minutes. I pay $100.00 and get 1,000 minutes that won't expire for a year. If they are going to expire I just add $10.00 more and it carries over for another year. We've been doing it that way for about 3 years now and are very happy with it. We did have a contract back in the day, but we never ever used the phones and we were paying $100.00 a month for them, that is why we changed over to the pre-paid.

RESEARCH WELL! We used a plan for our oldest and discovered that we ended up spending a *lot* of the $ put on the phone in LOW USAGE FEES! Check to ensure there's no monthly minimum (if you *truly* want it for emergencies only).

I would not suggest Verizon they have a monthly Fee in addition to the minutes you have to buy to talk on it
