Prenatal Vitamins.....

Ok, so here is my issue. I can't swallow my vitamins anymore. Things have been fine then all the sudden a few days ago I started gagging and almost throwing up, now I can't even put it in my mouth without gagging. I don't know what to do. I can still take my iron pill because it is small, but even when I cut up my prenatal I still can't swallow it. It has now been three day since I last took one. I feel awful about that. I know how important they are. I am 14 wks pregnant and am still having issues with all day sickness, but I have always been able to swallow my vitamin. I just worry.....I do that a lot though....it's one of my down falls. Anyway, I do have an appointment with my midwife next Tuesday and I plan on asking her if I should switch to another vitamin or what, but I was just wondering if any other moms have had this issue and what you did to get past it.
Thanks for any advice.
T.

I had the same trouble with my first pregnancy. I went through 3 different kinds. But on the other hand, I got told to take them at night before I go to bed with my second pregnancy. It helped so much!! Try that and see how it goes. Wish you best of luck!!

I had morning sickness with my first and even though I got it down, it came back up. My OB and Fam Dr. said if the vitamin is still whole when it comes up it's not worth taking so while I was sick I didn't take my pretanal vitamins. My babies are healthy!

Take as much juice(or milk, or SOMETHING you like to drink) into your mouth as you can after you pop the pill in. You won't even feel it go down. I went through the same thing when I was pregnant!
Good luck,
S.

Hey T., don't know if this would be a stupid question or not, but have you tried taking the prenatal vitamin later in the day? Because I remember when I was pregnant, I was always sick in the morning so I would take my prenatal at night time so I know it wouldn't come back up. Hope that helps, good luck :)

Hi. I had the same problem you should be able to get a prescription for chewable prenatals or I was told that if I couldn't handle the chewable prenatal to take two flinstone vitamins. I however found the taste of the prenatals to be much better than that of the flintstones but I know others who were the other way around. Hope this helps

When I was in my first trimester, I had a really hard time w/ my vitamins. I was able to take them, but they made me really sick. I was told by a nutritionist that you don't actually need to take the pre-natal vitamins. I stopped taking them for a little bit until my morning sickness went away. It also helped me to take them on a full stomach w/ a glass of milk. Maybe you're having a psycological reaction to the vitamins? I would say just skip them till you can talk to your midwife. It won't do you any good to take them if they just come right back up.

You can try Flinstones with Iron 2 a day. Those are what I was supposed to take but even those upset my stomach. I just didn't take them and I have 3 happy healthy kids.

Hi,
I was told that I would get all I needed from the Flintstones Complete chewable vitamins and I was so relieved. I only wished I would have known that with my first two children! Now all of us take Flintstones vitamins! Best wishes to you,
R.

I also think the Flinstones chewables would be OK, but make sure you are getting enough Folic Acid, this is very important for preventing neural tube defects. Also, they used to make a prenatal vitamin that was coated so that you couldn't taste or smell the vitamin, but I have forgotten what the name of it is, I bet your doctor or midwife would know.

I had the same problem and my OB's nurse told me that I could take the Flinestone's chewables (kids vitamins). Obviously check with your health care provider, but it may be an option for you too!! Good luck!

I couldn't take mine either when I was prego with my daughter. I know what you are going though. My OBGYN told me to take 2 flitstone vitamins or 2 kids vitamins. They have what you need in them and you can chew them up.
Hope I helped a little I also hope you feel better soon. Don't feel bad.

Hello! Sorry you're having a time with the all-day ms. I know pretty much what you're going thru, because I recently went thru this (presenty 27 weeks pregnant). My OB's office told me to take Flinstones's children chewable vitamins. I chewed up one and drank something afterwards and had no problems! I finally (about 2 months or so ago) started taking prenatal vitamins again, and am doing fine!
Congratulations and hope you feel better soon!:)

All the prenatals I tried made me sick so my doc told me to take just normal flintstones and it would work fine.

When I was pregnant with both of my kids I couldn't take my pre- natel vitamins without getting sick the entire time. My doctor recommended I try children's chewable Flintstone vitamins instead. They worked out much better. I'm pretty sure I had to take two of them instead of just one, wich is the childrens dosage. But you may want to ask your doctor to make sure. Hope this helps you out!

I can sympathize! I was sick constantly until my sixth month. I tried so many different vitamins I lost count. I too was put on the Flinstones. I took one in the morning and one at night (two at a time made me sick) and my folic acid. My daughter is happy and healthy. Good luck...I hope it passes soon.

Sorry to hear that you are having such a horrible time! Hopefully it'll pass for you soon.

When I was pregnant with my first daughter...2003 I was given a sample of a chewable vitamin. Just like the flintstones but bigger and prenatal. I didn't like it because I don't like chewables...tums makes me gag. I do however have a few friends and family members who absolutely swore by them. They had the same problem as you...couldn't even swallow a quarter of their pill.

I forget the name but I am sure your midwife can give you more insight. I think it may come in different flavors as well.

Hope this helps!

when i was pregnant, i waited until right before bed to take my vitamins that way i could just go to sleep and i didn't have to worry about them making me sick. as far as them gagging you, try cutting them in half. i always find it easier to take a drink and swallow then take another drink, pop the pill and swallow it all at the same time.
