My son was born at 33 weeks and is now 8 weeks old! He is still sleeping pretty much all day and night and it kind of concerns me! I haven't talked to his pediatrician yet, his appt is in a little over a week but I was just wondering what other mom's experience has been with their premature baby and his/her sleep?

What can I do next?

Dear M. M, I do not envy you at this time! My second son was born at 32 wks and I don't think I caught my breath for a year!!! He is the most perfect 2-1/2 year old now that you'd never know, but I remember the beginning to be nerve-wracking and awful!
When they sleep, they grow...premature or not. Sounds perfectly normal to me, from your brief description. 8 weeks is a very young baby (again, preemie or not). Some refer to the first 3 months of a baby's life as the "4th trimester" which I thought was a great way to describe it. The baby is adjusting to being outside of the womb and doesn't do much that he wouldn't have done while inside.
Ha ha ha! ENJOY THE DOWN TIME WHILE YOU CAN GET IT! And enjoy your new baby! :)

My twins were born at 34 weeks... same story for me. They slept a lot! The only concern I had was making sure they were growing, so I did have to wake them up to keep them on a feeding schedule. At their first check-up the Dr. was concerned about their lack of weight gain and said... wake em up to eat! A quick call to the ped. is probably a good idea.

best of luck.

Wow lucky moms, both of my boys were preemies one born 4 weeks early and my younest 6 weeks early and they woke to feed every 1 1/2-2 hours. But other than that, it seems like they really only slept that way for the first month.

My daughter was born at 33 weeks and she slept all the time until about 4 or 5 months when she started to have substantial awake times. If you adjust his age he is now considered to be a newborn. My daughter followed milestones according to her adjusted age not her actual age. It is quite normal for preemies to be a bit behind other children. Talk with your doctor but it sounds like to be everything is fine and normal. Enjoy the peace and quiet it won't be like that for much longer.

My son was born at 33 1/2 weeks and slept most of the day/night. Gosh, I don't remember him NOT sleeping...He's now almost 2 and still has 1-2 naps during the day and sleeps 12 hours at night.

Those tiny miracles just need their rest...

I don't have a premie, but have taken care of many babies including premies~ It is very normal for them to sleep most of the time until they reach full term and then as a term baby-- sleeping is a very big part of their routine!~ As long as your baby is eating regularly and peeing and pooping- they are fine! Sleep if you can when they are sleeping.

Take care,

Molly
