Pregnant with Rash on Abdomen

Hi everyone. I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. I am about 16 1/2 weeks pregnant with my second baby. After a hot shower yesterday, the pregnant part of my stomach (from the bellybutton down) broke out in a rash. Actually, I hesitate to call it a rash because it is no more itchy than my stomach normally is. I did not apply any soaps or creams that I haven't been using all along. There are no raised bumps. The skin looks red and angry, almost like a sunburn or steam burn. However, my stomach has not been exposed to anything. I have stretch marks from my first pregnancy, but they were almost invisible until yesterday. This redness is making them look really prominent too. The "rash" does seem a little less red today. I have heard of PUPPS, but isn't that supposed to occur in only the first pregnancy during the last trimester? This condition doesn't seem to be giving me any pain or discomfort. I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen. Is this something I should bother my midwife with over the weekend? Or can it wait until Monday for me to call? Thank you for your help!

What can I do next?

It sounds like PUPPPs to me. I got it in my 30th week and had it until I delivered. It steadily got worse after starting on my belly, spreading to my wrists and arms. I found the following soap and I recommend it to anyone! PUPPP Soap by Rainier Soapworks (link is below). It got rid of the rash for me and kept it away for most of the time. When I did get it again, it didn't itch while I used the soap. I used the soap once in the AM and before I went to bed. Hope this works for you too.

I would call if it seems to be getting worse. Maybe you could you try an Aveeno Oatmeal bath? It might calm it down a little. Hope it helps!

It doesn't exactly sound like PUPPS, but I would ask the midwife on Monday. Just for your info, I had a very severe case of PUPPS with my first pregnancy...from head to toe with unbearable discomfort. They almost took the baby early. I was relieved to hear that you can't get it again, when low and behold, I did get it early (around 20 weeks) in my second pregnancy. Fortunately it was mild in comparison. The doctor said it's very rare, but anything is possible. I did not have any with my third pregnancy.

Call your OB on Monday to check your rash. You said your stomach has been itchy - is it more itchy than when you were not pregnant? Are you itchy anywhere else? If you are very itchy (keeps you awake at night, distracts you during the day), on your stomach, hands, arms, feet, etc, it could be a sign of a serious liver problem that can occur during pregnancy (it's rare, but should be evaluated asap). For more info, check itchykmoms.com. My sister in law had this condition late in her first pregnancy and alerted her OB about it - the OB had never heard of it and she took a print out from the website in with her. She delivered early via c-section and her son was fine.

Good luck!

wait until monday, only one more day away. may be she can give you some advice of what to put on your stomach. i would not worry about it too much. every pregnancy is different and the body acts differently most times. in the meanwhile may be try some aveeno oatmeal bath. that may soothe the red rash. with the skins stretching it is important to keep the skin moisturized.

It sounds like it might be PUPPS. I had that with my first pregnancy and the only cure is delivery.
Don't scratch it will only make you more itchy.

M., You should definitely see your doctor for any rash you experience during pregnancy. I was diagnosed with PUPPS during my pregnancy. It was in September and I wasn't due until January. It was strange because it does usually occur in late pregnancy, but in my case it wasn't. The only thing was that I was EXTREMEMLY itchy. And the rash spread all over my belly, then was also on my arms and legs. It was horrible. Luckily, it cleared up after a few weeks. I thought I was going to have to suffer through it the whole rest of my pregnancy. Hopefully you are just having some sort of reaction to something. Good Luck!

hey M....

I had pupps with my first pregnancy during the 3rd trimester....worst thing ever. Then during my second pregnancy it did come back every now and again. It wasn't too big of a deal as long as I kept it lotioned well (sarna etc.)and made a conscious effort not to scratch. It would leave a few days later. But it really makes me think that it could be pupps because pupps really does display those stretch marks nicely. I am on my third trimester of my 3rd pregnancy and thankfully it never reappeared. But I do remember having it a few pts. thoughout my 2nd pregnancy. I wouldn't worry too much unless it is there for a long time and really bothering you...(keeping you up all night, etc.)....I hope this helps!! Good luck!!

Hi M.,

I don't know what the rash is, but I had puppps with my first pregnancy and it came the last couple of weeks of the pregnancy, not at the beginning and it was terrible. It was so itchy I was ready to get the baby out! I tried to take oatmeal baths, and the only thing that really worked was ice cubes to numb it, because once you started scratching it was all over.
I'm glad to hear your rash is not giving you a problem. I hope you don't have PUPPPs because it can you make you miserable....good luck!
