Hello Ladies,

I was wondering if anyone on here has or knows anyone that has gotten pregnant while they were on the IUD. I have had it since february and I love it (so does the hubby :) ) But here lately I have been sick and crabby. I have already had my period last month but this morning I was spotting, but I am not due to have my period till the 22nd of this month. Just a little worried. I know they say that this method of contriception is the best so I just wanted to see how many other women out there have still gotten pregnant. THANKS!!

What can I do next?

My cousin was conceived on the IUD, and I have heard some other stories as well. I also have the IUD and I LOVE it too, but as with anything there is always a chance. It is supposed to be 99.9% effective with no hormones(I have the copper one, not Mirena). So it is unlikely that you would be pregnant, but babies happen, haha. Anyway this might be a little blunt, but when I know I am probably ovulating we also use the pull out method, just for a little reassurance. Also, it took my body a while to adjust to the IUD. I had some between period spotting and funny periods occasionally, but now everything seems to be working just right. Hope this relieves some of your anxiety.

My best friend did get pregnant while on IUD. Her doctor had told her that it was the BEST birth control but a couple of months later-she was pregnant! They told her it must have fell out!

Hi A.,
I have an IUD (and love it also) since October '06.
I have a friend of a friend who got pregnant with her IUD, however, she later found out that it had fallen out. She was a teenager, though. (I have read that IUD expulsion is more common with teenagers.) Have you checked for the strings lately? Like with other BC methods, nothing is 100%. However, if you are concerned, take a pregnancy test. Any faint positive signs should be investigated further by a doctor. Ectopic pregnancies occur more often for women with IUDs than those without IUDs (but this is still very rare.) I have had this IUD for months now and I still occasionally spot from time to time mid-cycle.

I had an IUD for almost a year with no scares of pregnancy.

There are a lot of stories about conceiving with an IUD from 30 or so years ago. I wouldn't count those the same as IUDs today. They weren't nearly as effective as they are now.

I also had an IUD for almost 5 years (not the hormone one). I spotted some the first few months while my body adjusted. As for the crabby part...I am due the 23rd for my period and I have been pms-ing the past couple days. For some reason I have started to have pms more mid cycle than closer to my period. Maybe that is what you are doing!?

Hi A.,
I wanted to reply to your question because I know someone that DID get pregnant while having an IUD. It was a close family member(my first cousin). She had a copper IUD for a while and found out that she was pregnant after some time wearing it. I'm not sure if the IUD shifted or what (they are not suppose too) but I'm not sure of her symptoms but she did find out that she was pregnant. And here's the kicker, if you are pregnant they are going to have to remove the IUD which has a high risk of miscarrige but her baby survived. So God must have meant for that baby to be born. The baby was born very healthy and is growing like a weed. I'd have to admit that it was the first incident that I have ever known of where someone has gotten pregnant while using an IUD. Just to be on the safe side you may want to contact your doctor. Wish you all the best and take care.

T.

It depends on which IUD you got I guess. If you have the 5 year IUD it has hormones in it, so it would be like taking a pill. The 10 year IUD is copper and no hormones. the doctor told me that you can have a fertilized egg and carry it all the way to the uterus, but implantation doesn't occur because the copper changes the uteran lining.

My daughter fell pregnant with Aaron and Reuben (twins, now 16 months old) on an iud. They took it out when she was a couple of months pregnant, which was scary as I thought they just left them in until the delivery.

Good luck

I got the Mirena on May 1st of this year and I have spotted/bled every single day since then. I talked to my gyno and she said that it could take up to six months for my body to adjust and to quit having spotting completely. So, chances are you probably aren't pregnant.

Hey A.,
I have an I.U.D. I've had it since October of last year. My doctor told me that my period would eventually be non existant. Which now it is. When I first got the I.U.D., I had a regular period, then it was just spotty, now it doesn't come anymore. The fact that I don't ever had a period now kind of bothers me though. Because just in case you can get pregnant while on the I.U.D., I don't know when or if I ovulate. My catering assistant had a friend who had the I.U.D for 2 years and got pregnant. With me, so far, so good though.

I have a friend who is 4 months pregnant. She had an IUD for not even a year. She started losing weight and it slipped..

Otherwise Mirena says it's safter than sterilization.
