Pregnant 17 Year Old Niece

My 17 year old niece is pregnant. She is considering coming to live with my husband and I. However, she would be moving from out of state. I was wondering if she would still qualify for WIC and either Medicaid’s Pregnant Women program or CHIPS prenatal program.
Any one have any info on this?

What can I do next?

That is nice you want to help your niece out, but you should contact those places yourself and find out if she would qualify for services. And write down the name of the person/title and phone extension of the people that you contact. On this Mamasource board, people might offer helpful information that might or might not apply in her circumstances.

Hi G.,

Both are very easy to qualify for. As long as she is not working, she'll qualify for the pregnant medicaid and even if she is working, she will most likely qualify. My husband was working when I got pregnant yet I was not and I still qualified. As far as WIC, all she'll have to do is show them a medicaid card and she qualifies.

The baby will be covered the first year after being born under medicaid insurance. If she starts working then she can reapply after a year and either qualify for medicaid or CHIPS. It's usually very hard to get ahold of anyone via phone at the Health and Human Services office. My advice would be to call 211 and they can provide you more information and mail your niece an application for assistance.

Good luck to you and your niece.

Check with your local agencies but where I live, I know from experience that things like WIC medicaid, etc. are based on household income so that includes you and your husband not just her. I had my son right before my 18th birthday and until I moved out was unable to get any assistance from state funded programs such as those. I don't think it matters if she moves from another state though.
It is great that you are supporting her in whatever choice she makes. Keep up the good work.

Yes, you would have to apply for "emergency pregnancy" and she will get medicaid throughout her pregnancy, after the baby is born she will continue to get medical coverage for herself, I forgot for how long, but then there are options for her baby's medical and she will qualify for wic.

Hope it works out I know it's hard :(
