So I posted about a week ago that I thought I was pregnant and the verdict is in. I AM!!! Looks like I'm due in late January. We're so excited!

I have a question though. I'm one of these people that suffer from horrible seasonal allergies. As with my son I know I can't take much, but I cannot remember how soon I started taking sudafed when I was pregnant with him. Anyone know?? Or have any natural remedies that are safe while pregnant(I'm only right over 4 weeks)

What can I do next?

I had allergies while pregnant with my daughter last spring/summer and had a lot of phlegm in my throat because of this (which would cause me to gag and throw up). My doc put me on zyrtec and it worked great!

I also have horrible allergies. When I was pregnant with my twins, my doctor said I could take Claritan. Its over the counter now and the generic isn't too expensive. It really helped me.

HI! Congrats! You could try a Neti Pot. It's safe, all natural and cleanses your sinuses. It's kind of weird at first, but it really works good. Just google it or look at you local health food store!!!

Congrats! I would try aromatherapy. Most essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy. Tea Tree Oil, Menthol, even Lavender have nasal clearing properties. I also suggest finding a midwife, they're usually pretty good about natural things. Good luck!

I see others mentioned a neti-pot. I've had mine for almost 2 years. I first bought it because I was having terrible sinus infections. I still ended up having sinus surgery, but it did relieve symptoms.

I don't have a lot of allergies - dust, dog, cat tested positive, but I know molds will do it, too. I do have asthma, and if I use the neti-pot after being around a lot of triggers - the allergies, smoke, strong perfumes, etc - it seems to get all of that washed out before it makes it down to my lungs. If I've been having trouble with asthma or allergies, I make sure to use it before bed each night to clean out the gunk I breathed in all day.

I bought my neti-pot at Wild Oats. There is another product out that has a large, soft-plastic squirt bottle with a large spout - but it left a nasty plastic taste/smell behind.

One thing I use now as kind of a portable alternative is the Simply Saline spray. Because you can use a constant stream, instead of squirt-squirt like most saline sprays, you can really use it to clean out the stuff that's irritating your nose. And it doesn't need preservatives, so it doesn't have that gag-nasty taste. It's more expensive, but I was surprised at how much is in each can.

I have also tried Alkalol and Ponaris(I think that's it). Alkalol is a liquid you can use as drops or in a netipot, or even gargle with, that helps break up thick gunk. Tastes nasty, but it does help. Ponaris is similar, but it's in a glycerin base and I sometimes use it at night. It tastes really nasty, so I just use a cotton swab and wipe it inside my nose because the drops run down my throat and gag me. Both of these have natural oils like eucalyptus and peppermint and such, so it's kind of like running a cough drop through your nose. They can be hard to find. I found Alkalol in the special order end-cap by the pharmacy at Target. The Ponaris I only found in the pharmacy in my ENT's building - he recommends it to patients, so they keep some in stock. That's the Georgetown Medical Building (the brown brick one) by Shawnee Mission Med Center.

Oh - and Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I am a big believer in natural remedies ~ My husband and daughter both have allergies but with the natural remedies we use they feel better and they seem like they arent as "bad" anymore...

Check this site out : http://www.youngliving.com/
You can read testimonials about people with allergies and how they have made them go away with the use of essential oils. Just search testimonials = Allergies. (They will say if you should or shouldnt use certain ones while pregnant)

And... this is something new I have heard about. Meadows baby sitter has had horrible allergies lately and she got one this week. She says it is amazing how much better it made her feel. It is called a Neti Pot **you can read about it here: http://www.healingdaily.com/exercise/neti-pot.htm
You can get them at almost any all natural health and food stores.

Good luck ~ and I think it is wonderful that you are interested in natural remedies because I believe it truly is the best way to go for you and the baby!

Congratulations K.! My two children were both born in late January. It's a great month for birthdays!

Make sure that you wait until after your 1st trimester. That is critical. I have allergies as well, and I did not take anything during my pregnancy. Call your OBGYN, I'm sure he/she will give you a good alternative.

Congratulations!! :) I'm not sure about medications but for a natural remedy, I've heard eating honey that is from local bees is supposed to help! I don't know if it's true, but my husband is suffering from allergies right now and I'm hoping to find some local honey and test out the theory.

I am the same way...horrible allergies! When I was pregnant it was at the peak season and my dr said OTC Alavert was fine to take. If that doesn't help you just ask your doc, there are several perscriptions that they can give you that are safe for pregnant women.

check with your ob because the list is ever changing but they have a list of all safe meds to take while pregnant. When I was pregnant with my son (he's 2 1/2) benadryl was on that list but sudafed was not - congrats

Hi K.!

Congrats on the great news! I have a three year old and a one year old. My doctor advised against Sudafed during both pregnancies, but I was clear to take Zyrtec. You might ask your OB/GYN about it.

Hey K.,
Ask your doctor, but I believe you can take claritin.
My sister has the same allergies and I believe she mentioned that she can take claritin and one other allergy medicine.

Good luck and congratulations.

It all depends on your doctor. My sister's doctor will barely let her take Benedryl, while the doctor I used allowed Benedryl; Sudafed and Tylenol Allergy.

Yahoo!!! As far as the allergies go I saw on Oprah this thing Dr. Oz recommended. It was a flush that you put through your nose. Everyone was raving about it.

I know you can take Zyrtec and Benadryl, because I took both the whole time I was pregnant with both of mine, (I have year round allergies)

It use to be you couldn't take any, but that has changed now. Call your doctor, of course and double check.

Homeopathic wise, find some local honey (not grocery store bought, local stuff you can normally find it at farmer markets or little local shops.) and put it in your tea, toast, anything, that will help you some.

I was going to mention Dr.Oz also! He was on Opera talking about the Netti Pot and they even had a few people try it w/ allergies & said it has changed their lives! I would say give that a try!
Take care & Congrats!!!

Little more about the Netti Pot- it looks like a small tea pot & you put warm salty water in it then place in one nostril and slowly poor. The water will fill up into you whole since cavity and then start draining out the other nostril. Basically it washes out all the crevices in you nose which store the contents causing your allergies. I know it probably sounds weird but no one will see you do it! Maybe go on line & research it more(not sure if I spelt it correctly but that is the name of it).

Congratulations. There isn't much that you can take until you are at least 12 weeks along. Talk to your OB he/she can either let you know what you can take or give you a prescription.

Hi K.,

My best recomendation is to switch all your household products to natural without harsh chemicals.
I am buying them through a health and wellness company that just for a small membership you can buy at retail price, cheaper than the products you normally buy.
It has made a huge difference in my familie's allergies.
Hope it helps,

Congratulations!!

I take Elderberry juice concentrate for my allergies. It helps tremendously. You can get it from Wyldewood Cellers, or the Whole Foods here in Wichita carry the Wyldewood brand. I take 1-2 teaspoons every morning, and when I get really bad evening also. I don't care for the taste of it by itself, but it's really good in a little bit of cranberry or grape juice. My daughter is 11 1/2 months old and I've just started giving her some too, about 1/4 teaspoon once a day. Hope this helps!
